On Wednesday, the Navajo Nation Council will convene for a special session to consider several pieces of legislation, including one to return the Navajo Nation Council to 88 members despite a Dec. 15, 2009 initiative where Navajo voters reduced the size of the Navajo Nation Council to 24 members. Navajo President Joe Shirley Jr. is doubtful that the Navajo people will support this.

Navajo Council introduces referendum to return to 88 members

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - On the anniversary of a special election that reduced the Navajo Nation Council to 24 delegates, the Council's Ethics and Rules Committee last week approved an agenda for a special session beginning on Wednesday that includes legislation to return the Council to 88 members. The 88-Member Council Election Referendum Act of 2010, sponsored by Delegate Kee Yazzie Mann, purports to refer a referendum measure for a special election.
