Winslow Bulldogs top Window Rock before falling to Snowflake in Sectional tourney

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Snowflake Lobos came from behind in the final period to edge the Winslow Bulldogs 66-57 in the sectional championship game at Chinle Feb. 13.

The win improved Snowflake's record to 27-3 going into the state tournament. Winslow's record fell to a still excellent 23-7 going into the state tournament.

Snowflake had barely edged the Tuba City Warriors 53-51 in the semifinals Feb. 12. Winslow earned its berth in the finals by defeating the Window Rock Scouts 64-48 in their semifinal game.

In the championship game the Lobos took a 17-10 lead in the first quarter. Winslow came back with a very strong second quarter and took a 31-24 lead by the half.

Snowflake came back in the third quarter but Winslow still led 44-43 going into the final period.

Kegan Bjorrn led all scorers with 22 points for Snowflake. Kurt Wood with 14 points and Jordan Gardner with 11 were also in double figures for the Lobos.

Nate Hollins led Winslow with 17 points. Nathan Hanley with 12 points and Dalvin Benally with 11 were in double figures for the Bulldogs and Rory Billie tallied nine points.

In Friday's semifinal game the Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Window Rock Scouts 64-46. The win improved Winslow's record to an excellent 23-6 and earned them a berth in Saturday's championship game against the winner of a later game between Snowflake and Tuba City.

Window Rock's loss left them with a still excellent 15-9 record. The Scouts will also likely be in the state tournament.

The Bulldogs sped to a double digit 14-4 lead in the first quarter. Winslow continued to build their margin and led 27-13 at the half.

Winslow continued to be in control with a 44-18 lead after three quarters of play. The Bulldogs were never threatened in a surprisingly decisive victory over a good Window Rock team.

Hanley led all scorers with 23 points for Winslow. Billie with 10 points, Hollins with 11 and Akeem Foster were at or near double figures tor the Bulldogs. Shammond Goodman led Window Rock with 17 points. Tyrese Brown was also in double figures for the Scouts with 14 points.
