SHOW LOW, Ariz. - Ashley Harvey led the way with 14 points and Taylor Seechoma poured in a dozen when Hopi High beat Show Low 57-38 in girls basketball action Feb. 2.
The Lady Bruins are 10-14 overall and ranked No. 18 in the state. The top 24 teams in Division Four go to the state playoffs.
The others scoring for Hopi High were ThaRae Day who netted nine points, and Taminney Laragutierez tossing in eight points. Janaya Day and Stacie Charlie both scored a half dozen each and Shania Nodman had a deuce.
D. Zatar led Show Low with a dozen points.
Seechoma fired in nine points in the opening period while Hopi jumped to an 11-6 edge. Harvey tossed in four points in the second quarter. The Lady Bruins led at halftime 19-14.
Harvey netted six points and Charlie added four as Hopi led 37-27 after three periods. Laraguttierez poured in five points and Harvey added four in the final frame while the Lady Bruins coasted to the victory.
Hopi High Coach Barry Honyouti said the Hopi girls struggled in the first half but played much better in the second half, especially in the final quarter.
"Our offense picked up the pace in the third and fourth quarters, but we need to play well for four quarters," he said.
Honyouti said good team defense kept the Lady Bruins in the game when their offense was sputtering. He said the Hopi girls did well with rebounds as Charlie, Seechoma and Harvey all helped out on the backboards.
Honyouti said it's nice to be ranked No. 18 in the state, but two games remain and "losing those two games could break us."
The Hopi High girls played in the sectional tournament in Flagstaff Feb. 9.
