POLACCA, Ariz. - Hopi High walloped Rough Rock, 52-0, in football action Sept. 3 at Bruin Stadium. The Bruins are 2-0 after beating Ganado 32-22 the previous week.
The game was called at halftime because of the lopsided score and a thunderstorm. The Hopi High Pep Band and Hopi High Cheerleaders were loud enough to make the game festive.
It took Hopi less than a minute to get on the scoreboard when Wyatt Howard rambled 24 yards to paydirt. Quarterback Isaah Panana-Wytewa scored the conversion points on a quarterback keeper. Hopi led 8-0 with 11:17 left in the first period.
After four Rough Rock plays, Hopi took over at the two yard line. Panana-Wytewa plunged in for the two-yard touchdown and also ran in the conversion points giving the Bruins a 16-0 lead with 9:51 remaining in the first quarter.
Four plays later Hopi intercepted an errant Rough Rock pass. On the next play, Howard ran 19 yards into the endzone. Panana-Wytewa ran in the conversion points giving the Bruins a 24-0 lead with 6:55 to go in the opening period.
On the next play from scrimmage, Hopi's Jaelyn Silas picked up a fumble and returned it 20 yards for the touchdown. Panana-Wytewa again ran in the conversion points for the 32-0 bulge with 6:37 left in the first quarter.
Rough Rock moved from its own 41-yard line to the Hopi 30 before fumbling. On the next play, Howard ran 39 yards for the touchdown. The run attempt failed for the conversion points, but the Bruins led 38-0 with one minute left in the opening quarter.
Four plays into the second quarter Hopi recovered a Rough Rock fumble. On the next play, Panana-Wytewa took off on a 46 -yard touchdown run. Panana ran in the conversion points for a 46-0 edge.
Later in the second period Brandon Ross ran right up the middle on a 25-yard touchdown romp.
The run attempt failed, but Hopi led 52-0 with 5:37 left in the half. Rough Rock failed to get a first down on its next drive and Hopi ran out the clock.
