Hopi High School Bruins dominate Pinon for 78-6 homecoming win

POLACCA, Ariz. -The Bruins started slowly, but exploded in the second quarter and went on to wallop Pinon, 78-6, in  the homecoming football game Oct. 16 at Bruin Stadium.

Hopi High's team improved to 7-1 for rookie Coach Raleigh Namoki. The game was festive after the homecoming parade earlier in the day. Heavy rain drenched participants during the parade. However, the rain cleared up for the game. A full homecoming story and photos will be featured in next weeks edition of the NHO.

Wyatt Howard and Isaiah Wytewa-Panana were the stars, but they had plenty of help with Braniff Nehoitewa, Damian Lomatuwayma, Omaohoya Lomahoyouma, Theodore Rucker and Travis Mahle were among those joining in the scoring spree.

The Bruins went to their passing game early and often. The teams exchanged fumbles in the early going before Hopi went 49 yards in four plays for the game's first score.

Quarterback Howard set up the touchdown (TD) with  a 13-yard pass to Wytewa-Panana before hitting Wytewa-Panana again on a 29-yard scoring strike. The extra point attempt failed, but Hopi led 6-0 with 7:55 left in the opening quarter.

Neither team could move the ball much during the rest of the first quarter, but on the last play of the opening quarter Wytewa-Panana fell on a Pinon fumble in the endzone as Hopi grabbed a 12-0 edge.

Pinon could not move the ball early in the second quarter and the Bruins took over on downs on their own 45-yard line. Five plays later, Hopi scored on an 11-yard pass from Howard to Wytewa-Panana. The run attempt failed, but the Bruins led 20-0 with 8:16 remaining in the second quarter.

It took just 17 seconds for Hopi to score again. The Bruins recovered an onside kick. On the next play, Howard hit Lomatuwayma with a 47-yard bomb to score. The conversion points were good and Hopi jumped ahead 28-0.

On Pinon's next play from scrimmage, Hopi's Ah-Goon Honie intercepted a pass and returned it to the Eagles five-yard line.

Three plays later, Howard found Lomahoyouma in the end zone for the two-yard touchdown pass. The run attempt failed, but the Bruins led 34-0 with 6:13 remaining until halftime.

Pinon moved the ball down to the Hopi 24-yard line before giving up the ball on downs. It took Hopi just three plays to move 76 yards. Howard fired a 19-yard TD pass to Lomatuwayma. The extra point attempt failed, but Hopi led 40-0 with 3:58 to go until intermission.

Two plays later Hopi intercepted a Pinon pass as the Bruins took over at the 30-yard line. On the next play, Howard found Wytewa-Panana for the 30-yard touchdown pass. The run failed, but the Bruins led 46-0 with 3:15 remaining until halftime.

Pinon failed to move the ball on its next possession allowing Hopi to score on the last play of the half when Howard connected with Theodore Rucker on a 14-yard TD pass as the Bruins led 52-0 at halftime.

The referees had a running clock in the second half because of the lopsided score, but the Bruins just kept on scoring. Howard scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper to start the third period. Toward the end of third quarter, Nehoitewa rambled eight yards for the touchdown to give Hopi a 64-0 lead.

Early in the fourth period, Howard connected with Wytewa-Panana for a 24-yard TD pass. Pinon finally scored on a 47-yard run with 5:25 left in the game.

That just setup another Bruin touchdown when Wytewa-Panana returned the ensuing kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown with 2:55 remaining in the game.
