Mixed results for young Bulldogs team at Falcon Baseball Invitational tourney

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow High School baseball team started the season Feb. 26 in the Falcon Baseball Invitational at Fountain Hills High School. The young Bulldogs team won one game, lost two and tied one in the three day event.

Winslow tied Bourgade 8-8, lost to Holbrook 7-6 and lost to Fountain Hills 14-9 and defeated Camp Verde 12-5.

After the tournament, Coach Art Griffith said the Bulldogs should have won the game they tied and one of the games they lost. He said mistakes from newer players were costly and that the kids had a lot to learn. He added that they would work on learning the game and eliminating those mistakes.

Kuster Kinlicheenie worked all six inning in the win over Camp Verde. He allowed just five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. Only two of Camp Verde's runs were earned.

Winslow had to come from behind with a nine-run sixth inning to win the game. The Bulldogs had 10 hits in the game led by Kevin Brown's two for two and Chance Dick's two for three day. Rey Chavez-Velez was two for four. K. C. Clay was one for two. Junior Villanueva and Brandon Sedillo were one for three and Matthew Ramos was one for five.

In the 8-8 tie with Bourgade, Villanueva went the full six innings and allowed eight runs on 11 hits and four walks with six strikeouts. Four of Bourgade's runs were earned and four unearned. Winslow had 11 hits led by Kinlicheenie's two for three day. Chavez-Velez, Brown, Villanueva and Clay all went two for four. Nick Marquez was one for two.

Holbrook scored all seven of its runs in the third inning of its 7-6 win over the Bulldogs on four hits, a walk, a hit batter and an error. Winslow scored three runs in the first inning and got two in the third and one in the fourth inning. Winslow had six hits led by Ramos with one for one. Kinlicheenie and Clay were one for two with Kinlicheenie having a triple. Chavez-Velez, Sedillo and Villanueva were one for three with Villanueva hitting a double.

In the 14-9 loss to Fountain Hills Winslow had nine hits with three players going two for three: Brown, Ramos and Villanueva. Villanueva hit a double. Dick and Kinlicheenie were one for three and Chavez-Velez was one for four.

The Flagstaff Eagles will play the Bulldogs in Flagstaff on Thursday in Flagstaff and on Saturday at Winslow.
