Obituary: Mary Numkena

Mary Numkena passed away May 12 at home in Moencopi with her daughter and Velma M. present at the time of her death.

Mary was born on Jan. 10, 1916 to Mae and Shingotewa in Kykotsmovi, Arizona. Mary was raised by her older sister and Mark Quashera since her birth here in Moencopi.

Mary married Joseph A. Francis in 1934. She had a daughter, Shirley Ann and Ralph. After her divorce, she married William Numkena in 1940. She had three sons, Wilfred, Alan and Lawrence. Wilma was later brought into the family and raised by Mary and William.

Mary was adament in raising her children to get their education, which they all did.

Mary was active in The Churce of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints and held many positions through her life. The family were sealed in the LDS Temple.

Mary had two sons, one grandson and two great grandsons, who served missions for the LDS Church.

William, two sons and three grandsons served in the military during wartime.

Mary will be greatly missed. She was the last survivor of her family.

Mary leaves behind her children Shirley A. Smith, Wilfred Numkena, Lawrence, Alan, Ralph and Wilma Mendoza, around 23 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, around 14 great great grand children.

Funeral services were held at the gravesite in upper Moencopi on May 14.
