Winslow Bulldogs basketball team wins Tournament of Champions

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Tuba City Warriors 56-48 to win the Tournament of Champions Nov. 28 after defeating Chinle and Window Rock earlier in the week.

Nov. 25 the Bulldogs defeated the Chinle Wildcats 71-58 in the Tournament of Champions at Window Rock. The Bulldogs advanced with a 1-0 record. Chinle fell to 1-1.

Chinle had a narrow one-point 15-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs began to hit their shots in the second quarter and had a 38-26 lead at the half.  Winslow had a 14-point lead in the third quarter but Chinle came back and were only four points behind 48-44 at the end of the quarter. Winslow got going again in the fourth quarter and increased their lead to walk off with a 71-58 victory.

Akeem Foster led all scorers with 22 points for the Bulldogs. Nate Hollins was also in double figures for Winslow. Shane Yazzie led Chinle with 19 points, one more than Stanford Etsitty who tallied 18.

Nov. 28 the Bulldogs defeated the Tuba City Warriors 56-48 in the Tournament of Champions Championship Game at Chinle. The win was Winslow's third in as many games. Tuba City fell to 2-2 for the season.

Tuba City had a 14-8 lead after the first period of play but the Bulldogs held them to two points in the second quarter and took the lead before the Warriors scored their only basket of the period. Winslow built a commanding 36-16 lead by the half. The Bulldogs improved their lead to 45-29 by the end of the third period.

Foster led the Bulldogs with 14 points. Mark Faust was also in double figures for Winslow with 10 points and Rory Billy scored nine points. Davian Yazzie led all scorers with 20 points for Tuba City but was the only Warrior in double figures.
