Winslow, Monument Valley and Snowflake start season strong
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs, the Monument Valley Mustangs and the Snowflake Lobos all won their games so far this season while the defending state champion Blue Ridge Yellowjackets and the preseason favorite Show Low Cougars are winless.
Winslow defeated Blue Ridge 25-6 at Pinetop on Friday and owned an earlier 44-8 win over the Holbrook Roadrunners at Holbrook. The loss was Blue Ridge's third with previous losses to Sahuarita 30-8 on the road and 55-7 to Prescott in Pinetop.
Monument Valley defeated the Tuba City Warriors 27-12 at Tuba City on Friday and edged Red Mesa 21-20 at Kayenta earlier. The Mustangs will play Shiprock at Shiprock, New Mexico next.
The Snowflake Lobos came out on top against a tough Estrella Foothills Wolves team 28-21 on the road Sept. 5 and defeated the Mingus Marauders 37-8 at Snowflake earlier in the season. The Lobos are to play host to a talented Seton Catholic Sentinels team at Snowflake on Friday.
The Show Low Cougars have faced some fierce competition and lost to the Williams Field Black Hawks 35-24 on the road and the Tempe Prep Knights 30-22 at Show Low. The Cougars will try to get their ship righted against the Queen Creek Bulldogs at Show Low on Friday.
The Ganado Hornets also have two wins in as many games against smaller schools. The Hornets beat Many Farms 35-0 and the Hopi Bruins 27-12. Their next game is against the Chinle Wildcats.
Chinle played its first two games on the road, defeating the Alchesay Falcons 52-32 and losing to the tough St. Johns Redskins 27-7.
The Page Sand Devils defeated the Tuba City Warriors 32-14 at Page and lost to the Payson Longhorns 49-21 at Payson. The Sand Devils will host Red Mesa on Friday.
The Holbrook Roadrunners lost to the Lee Williams Volunteers in Kingman 26-7 Sept. 5. They lost to Winslow 44-8 at Holbrook earlier in the season. The Roadrunners will play host to the Willcox Cowboys on Friday.
