Lady Bulldogs win Payson Tourney

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs won the Payson Invitational Tournament with the final game ending in a forfeit because of an injury.

The tournament took place while the high school was on a two-week break and was a good test for the undefeated softball team in its second year under Coach Kellie Fifelski.

Winslow won the tournament with five wins on the field and one by forfeit in the championship game when two Willow Canyon players collided. Both players were taken to the hospital. Winslow was leading 5-4 at the time of the collision.

Winslow won three games in the tourney on March 21 with an 11-1 victory over the Round Valley Lady Elks, an 8-5 victory over the Camp Verde Lady Cowboys and a 16-0 win over the Sunnyslope Lady Vikings.

The next day the Lady Bulldogs topped the Benson Lady Bobcats 13-2 and beat the Blue Ridge Lady Yellowjackets 9-2. The wins improved Winslow's record to a perfect 13-0 for the season.

In the 9-2 win over Blue Ridge Taylor Baca got the win giving up two runs on three hits. Halle Hayes was two for two with a triple. Baca, Alyssa Smith, Rene Bollin and Richelyn Villanueva were all two for three with Baca, Bollin and Villanueva hitting doubles. Megan Lymer was one for three.

Villanueva got the win in the 13-2 win over Benson in Saturday's first game. Liz Lozano was three for three at the plate. Jaleisa Hayes and Smith were two for three. Halle Hayes and Villanueva were two for four with Hayes hitting a double and a triple. Baca, Hailee Branson and Bollin were one for three. Lymer was one for four.

In the 11-1 win over Round Valley on Friday, Halle Hayes earned the victory working three scoreless innings and giving up no hits and one walk with nine strikeouts. Villanueva gave up a run on two hits in relief. Branson and Sierra Wilcox were three for three at the plate. Villanueva was one for two with a home run. Taylor Baca, Smith, Lymer and Halle and Jaleisa Hayes were all one for three with Lymer connecting for a triple.

In the 8-5 win over Camp Verde, Baca got the win giving up no hits or runs in three innings. Villanueva gave up five runs, four of which were earned, on four hits. Halle Hayes was two for three with a triple. Branson, Bollin and Jaleisa Hayes were one for two with Branson and Bollin having doubles. Baca, Smith and Villanueva were one for three with Villanueva hitting a double.

In the 16-0 win over Sunnyslope on Friday, Halle Hayes got the win with relief from Baca. Sunnyslope had only two hits. Jaleisa Hayes was three for three with two doubles and a triple. Lozano was one for one with a double. Lymer was two for three with a double. Bollin was one for two. Halle Hayes and Smith were one for three with Hayes hitting a triple.

Winslow was slated to play host to Blue Ridge Tuesday after the Observer went to print and play the Coconino Lady Panthers in Flagstaff on Thursday.
