SHOW LOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Payson Lady Longhorns 66-43 in a Division III Sectional Tournament game played in Show Low Feb. 4.
The win improved Winslow's record to 21-4 for the season and dropped Payson's to 12-16.
Winslow went on to beat Snowflake 53-39 in Show Low Feb. 15 for the Sectional Championship.
Winslow managed the decisive win against Payson despite the loss of their star player for most of the game. Shandiin Armao injured her ankle in the first quarter and scored only two points.
The Lady Bulldogs built a double-digit 15-5 lead in the first quarter despite missing all five of their free throws and a plethora of close shots.
The second period was evenly played and Winslow maintained its 10 point 29-19 lead at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs clinched the victory with a huge third quarter after which they led 49-26. Reserves played most of the final period.
Halle Hayes led all scorers with 20 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Marcella Joe was also in double figures for Winslow with 12 points and had an outstanding game on defense and had an abundance of assists. Jacey Sangster also finished in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs with 10 points including some key baskets early when she and Hayes did most of the scoring.
Tessa Hintze led Payson with 14 points. Arrissa Paulson with 12 points and Cori Barnett with 11 were also in double figures for the Lady Longhorns but only one more player scored for Payson, Harley Turney with four points. Winslow had eight players score.
