Lady Bulldogs clinch tourney top seed with 50-35 win
SNOWFLAKE, Ariz. -The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated Snowflake 50-35 and won the top seed in the Sectional Tournament on Feb. 7. In the second game on Friday, though, the Snowflake Lobos defeated the Winslow Bulldogs 63-53 to take the top seed in the boys' Sectional Tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs' win improved Winslow's record to 20-4 for the season. The important win clinched first place in the section going into the sectional tournament in Show Low that began Tuesday.
Winslow took a 15-7 lead in the first quarter and had a double digit 28-16 lead at the intermission. The lead was a comfortable 43-22 after three quarters, and while Snowflake cut into the margin in the final period the outcome was never in doubt.
Jacey Sangster led all scorers with 16 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Halle Hayes was also in double figures for Winslow with 11 points. Jessica Neff led Snowflake with 12 points.
The Winslow junior varsity girls finished a highly successful season with a 45-33 victory to compile a solid 17-1 record.
The Lady Bulldogs played the Payson Lady Longhorns in Show Low on Tuesday in the Sectional Tournament after the Navajo-Hopi Observer went to press.
In the second game the Snowflake Lobos defeated the Winslow Bulldogs 63-53 in Snowflake Feb. 7 in the final basketball game of the regular season. The win assured Snowflake the top seed in the Sectional Tournament. Winslow could have won that honor with a victory.
Snowflake took an excellent 29-4 record into the tournament while Winslow fell to a still impressive 11-11 going into the Sectional Tournament where they played the Alchesay Falcons Feb. 11.
The game was tied 17-17 after the first quarter but Snowflake kept Winslow to just nine points in the second quarter and led 32-26 at the half. The margin was 49-36 after three quarters, and while the Bulldogs cut into the lead, the game was not in much doubt in the final period.
Dallin Fuss led all scorers with 16 points for Snowflake, which had four players in double figures. Rick Shumway and Luke Davis both scored 15 points and Kurt Wood tallied 11 for the Lobos. Stevin Nelson led the Bulldogs with 14 points. Frank Kelly was in double figures with 13 points and Keenan Keams scored nine for Winslow.
The Winslow junior varsity team defeated Snowflake's junior varsity 58-53 to complete an undefeated 19-0 season.
