WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs got a pair of important and impressive wins at the end of last week with a victory over Payson on the road and a win at home against a tough Show Low squad.
The Bulldogs defeated the Payson Longhorns 68-61 in a basketball game played at Payson Jan. 30. The win improved Winslow's record to 18-10 for the season. Payson fell to 7-20 with the loss.
The Longhorns had a narrow 16-14 lead after the first quarter but sped to a double digit 39-29 margin by the half. Payson was still ahead 52-44 after three quarters. Winslow rallied and outscored the Longhorns 24-9 in the final period to walk away with the victory.
Keenan Keams led all scorers with 15 points for Winslow. Trevor Begay scored 14 points and Stevin Nelson scored 12 points for the Bulldogs. Trelonnie Sanders scored eight for the victors. Matt Davis led Payson with 14 points. Chaz Davis was in double figures for the Longhorns with 13 points and Austin Young scored nine points.
The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Show Low Cougars 68-54 in a basketball game played at Winslow Jan. 31. The win improved Winslow's record to 19-10 for the season. Show Low dropped to 17-12 for the season. The win was the fourth straight for the Bulldogs.
Show Low started very strong and had a 22-17 lead after the first quarter of play but the Bulldogs rallied with excellent three point shooting and took a 39-35 advantage into the locker room at intermission. Winslow stretched the lead to 51-44 by the end of the third quarter and pulled away in the final period.
Nelson led Winslow and all scorers with 23 points. Milland Thomas with 13 points and Sanders with 12 points were also in double figures for the Bulldogs. Jackson Jessop led Show Low with 18 points. Sean Potter was also in double figures for the Cougars with 15 points. Sam Tate scored nine for the visitors.
Three-point shooting was key for the Bulldogs. Winslow made 11 long range shots while the Cougars, who had a 15 to eight advantage in two point field goals, knocked in just four three-point shots. Winslow also hit a superb 19 of 21 free throw attempts to 12 of 18 for the Cougars.
The Bulldogs play at Snowflake on Thursday.
Lady Bulldogs dominate Payson and Show Low
The Winslow Lady Bulldogs put together a pair of important wins at the end of last week. They topped Payson at Payson Jan. 30 and got an easy win at home over a weak Show Low team the next day.
The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Payson Lady Longhorns 56-35. The win improved Winslow's record to 17-4 for the season. Payson fell to 9-15 for the season.
The Lady Bulldogs led after every period after establishing an 18-14 advantage in the first quarter. The margin was 27-18 at the half and a commanding 41-21 after three quarters.
Arissa Paulson of Payson led all scorers with 16 points. Cori Barnett scored nine for the Lady Longhorns. Only five Payson players scored and no other Lady Longhorn had more than five points.
Shandiin Armao and Marcella Joe each scored 13 points to lead Winslow. Jacey Sangster scored nine points and Halle Hayes knocked in eight points for the Lady Bulldogs.
On Friday the Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Show Low Lady Cougars 48-16 in a basketball game played in Winslow. The win improved Winslow's record to 17-4 for the season. Show Low fell to 2-23 for the season.
Winslow had a double digit 14-4 lead after the first quarter and a commanding 32-6 halftime lead. The margin was 46-13 after three quarters, which kept the clock running through the fourth quarter.
Armao led all scorers with 13 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Tannon Tom was also in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs with 10 points. Joe scored eight points and Hayes scored seven points.
Sierra Reidhead led Show Low with 10 points but only three more Lady Cougars scored, all with just two points apiece.
The Lady Bulldogs will play at Snowflake on Thursday.
