Ganado Hornets open football season against Many Farms

GANADO, Ariz. - The Ganado Hornets football team will open its 2014 season at home against the Many Farms Lobos Aug. 29.

Ganado defeated Many Farms 38-0 to begin last season. The Hornets won five games and lost five in a year in which they won the first four games and lost the last four. This season's schedule also appears to become more difficult in the second half of the season.

The Hornets will entertain the Hopi Bruins Sept. 5. The Hornets defeated the Bruins in a close 28-14 game early last season.

After that game the Hornets will hit the road for the first time this season when they venture to Red Mesa to meet the Red Mesa Red Skins Sept. 12. Last season the Hornets clobbered Red Mesa 74-0.

Ganado's first test against a team from their conference will come on Sept. 19 when they journey to Chinle to meet the Chinle Wildcats. Ganado came away with an impressive 34-28 win over Chinle in 2013 in a very close game.

The Holbrook Roadrunners handed Ganado its first loss last season 34-6. Ganado is slated to visit Holbrook Sept. 26 in what should be another tough test for the Hornets.

Ganado's last win of the 2013 season came against the Greyhills Knights 48-18. Greyhills is slated to play the Hornets in Ganado Oct. 2. After this game the schedule looks much more difficult for the Hornets.

The Page Sand Devils are slated to play the Hornets at Ganado Oct. 10. The Sand Devils soundly defeated Ganado 61-28 last season. Page was a playoff team last season.

The Winslow Bulldogs were also a playoff team and played well in the post season. The Hornets will meet Winslow at home Oct. 17. Winslow easily defeated the Hornets 50-0 last season.

The Hornets will end their season on the road with games against the Monument Valley Mustangs at Kayenta Oct. 24 and against the Window Rock Scouts at Window Rock Oct. 31. Last season Monument Valley, a playoff team, defeated the Hornets 53-8 and Window Rock edged the Hornets 21-14 in a close game.

Brandon Newcomb is the Ganado head coach. A roster of team members is not yet available yet.
