Slice of life: Devin Singh, Winslow Quality Inn manager

The Navajo-Hopi Observer spoke with Devin Singh to take a look at his experience as a Winslow resident and Quality Inn Hotel manager. Singh is originally from India and talked a little about his background as well as his present position.

How many years have you lived in Winslow and how many years have you been in the United States?

In Winslow two months shy of four years now and I've been living in the United States 30 years.

Where in India were you born and raised?

I come from the northern part of India in the state of Punjab. My father was in the Army so I was lucky to be born in a real hospital. Most of my life there was in a very small village.

How long have you worked with the Quality Inn people?

Close to four years. Before this, my life has been a mixed bag but I worked mostly as a business owner and business manager. Insurance sales, running a trucking company, running a restaurant and working with a franchise restaurant like Coco's. But this is my first opportunity to run a hotel.

How long have you been open here?

We opened here in September 2010. We have been evolving our restaurant menu since that time to make sure we serve the tastes and pocketbook of our general public. Recently we have put on five different kind of burgers and introduced a variety of appetizers.

Do you think you will stay here for a while?

Yes, I love this situation. For a long time I was seeking, looking for a way to integrate my life and relationships and my occupation together. I'm completely happy here in Winslow. But when my wife and I first moved here, she cried for six months! Now she's happy here.

What is the hardest thing about your job?

The long hours. The Quality Inn is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, it's my responsibility.

What do you like best about your job?

The people. My interaction with my guests and employees provides me my greatest satisfaction.
