Dew Downtown Flagstaff returns Feb. 9-10

Ski and snowboard event to take place on streets of downtown Flagstaff

The second annual Dew Downtown Flagstaff Urban Ski and Snowboard Festival returns Feb. 9-10 for a two-day ski and snowboard demonstration and competition on the streets of downtown Flagstaff.

New this year is an after-dark night ski session, a local restaurant booth with samples from downtown kitchens, and a multi-stage music festival in Heritage Square.

Organizers will once again transform San Francisco Street into the ultimate winter sport playground. Event organizers invite daredevils of all ages to grind, jump, and shred over trashcans, guardrails and other urban obstacles. Officials with the event have updated the 2013 course with a higher take-off ramp, new boxes and rails and a giant Mountain Dew bottle to ski over.

"Dew Downtown Flagstaff puts an unusual spin on this type of event, taking it out of the big ski resort setting and into the streets of Flagstaff," said Mark Lamberson, owner of Mountain Sports and international ski and snowboard contest director. "Flagstaff has long been known as an incredible winter sports destination and this event takes it to a whole new level."

Event-goers can clip on a board or skis and participate or sit on the sidelines as a spectator and watch the riders tackle the course. Many recognize this family-friendly event as a highlight of Flagstaff's month-long Winterfest celebration and one not to be missed.

The festivities take over Heritage Square on Feb. 9 with two stages for live music and performing arts and a tent with winter crafts and activities for kids that will turn into a beer and wine garden for adults after dark.

The entire weekend of events is free for spectators, who can also peruse local shops and restaurants that will offer specials for festival attendees. Anyone who wants to test this year's course can pay $10-20 to ski or board the course in a designated time block on Feb. 9.

The actual judged competition takes place Feb. 10 and also costs $10-20 to participate. Registration is now open and can be completed online or in person at the Flagstaff Aquaplex.

Mountain Dew, Suddenlink, Findlay Toyota, and the city of Flagstaff present the annual Dew Downtown Flagstaff Urban Ski and Snowboard Festival.
