Window Rock wins Chinle Tournament of Champions
Tuba City takes second, Chinle third, Winslow wins consolation bracket
The Window Rock Scouts won the Tournament of Champions at Chinle in late December over the Tuba City Warriors. Chinle took third place over Monument Valley and Winslow was the consolation winner over Holbrook.
Window Rock won the championship 61-52 over the Tuba City Warriors. The Scouts defeated the Bulldogs Dec. 27 in the opening round 65-61 and beat the Monument Valley Mustangs 84-69 in the semi-finals Dec. 28. Monument Valley edged out Holbrook 64-59 in an opening round game.
Tuba City ran all over the Ganado Hornets in the opening round, 67-27, and edged the Chinle Wildcats 81-79 in the semi-finals on Friday. Chinle defeated Monument Valley 77-53 for third place Dec. 29.
Holbrook narrowly defeated Ganado by a single point, 51-50, on Friday to earn its spot against Winslow in the consolation game.
The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Holbrook Roadrunners 52-43 in the consolation championship game of the Tournament of Champions at Chinle on Dec. 29. The win ended the 2012 portion of the team's schedule with an 11-4 record.
Holbrook led the Bulldogs 10-9 after the first quarter of the consolation game and was still up 28-27 at the half. Winslow had a 38-34 lead after three quarters of play and improved that margin in the final period.
Michael Goldtooth led all scorers with 14 points for the Bulldogs. Lukas Shirley also scored in double figures for the winners with 12 points and Stevin Nelson scored nine for Winslow. Kyle Chee was the only Roadrunner to score in double figures with 13 points.
