The Winslow Lady Bulldogs clinched the Winslow Winter Classic championship game with a 68-53 win over the Valley Sanders Lady Pirates in a Dec. 22 matchup that was much closer than the score indicates.
Winslow had a four-point lead with less than a minute to play when a referee called a foul and two technicals on the Lady Pirates, which increased Winslow's lead into double digits.
Valley Sanders trailed most of the first quarter but rallied to lead 14-11 and led 35-31 at the half. Winslow came back to lead 49-48 at the end of three quarters of play. The fourth quarter went back and forth before the double technical foul put the game out of reach for Valley Sanders.
Laylane Benslow led all scorers with 21 points for Winslow. Shandiin Armao scored 19 points and Mattea Begaii knocked down 14 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Halle Hayes scored eight points and Marcella Joe scored six points to round out Winslow scoring. Adrianna Nez led the Lady Pirates with 16 points. Chelena Betoney and Kristen Quigley both scored 11 points and Tamara Nez scored 10 points for Valley Sanders. Rolanda Mitchell scored seven points.
Valley Sanders 54-Window Rock 44
The Valley Sanders Lady Pirates defeated the Window Rock Lady Scouts 54-44 to advance to the final game against Winslow later in the day Dec. 22. The Lady Pirates took an 18-16 first period lead and expanded it to 29-23 by the half. The Lady Pirates put together a commanding 46-33 lead after three quarters of play. Aspen Sheppard led Window Rock with 20 points. Three players scored in double digits for the Lady Pirates led by Adrianna Nez with 19 points. Krista Quigley scored 15 points and Chelsea Betoney had 12 points for the victors.
Winslow 59-Chinle 38
The Winslow Lady Bulldogs cruised past the Chinle Lady Wildcats 59-38 in the other semi-final game on Saturday to earn a berth in the finals against Valley Sanders. The Lady Bulldogs led 20-4 after the first period and 37-15 at the half. The margin was 51-29 after three quarters. Kristen Begay of Chinle led all scorers with 18 points. Shandiin Armao led Winslow with 14 points. Mattea Begaii also scored in double figures for the victors with 13 points and Tannon Tom added nine points for the Lady Bulldogs.
Joseph City 58-Holbrook 50
In the first game of the tournament the Joseph City Lady Wildcats defeated the Holbrook Lady Roadrunners 58-50 in a close contest early Friday. The team advanced to play Window Rock later that day. The Lady Wildcats sped to a 20-8 first period lead but only led by a point, 26-25, at the half. The teams were tied 38-38 after three quarters of play. Joseph City outscored Holbrook 20-12 in the final period to claim the victory. Searra Hansen and Kristin Baldwin each scored 22 points for the Lady Wildcats to lead all scorers. Taylor Hill also scored in double figures for Joseph City. Kaynaia Curley led Holbrook with 19 points. Teyah Goldtooth scored nine for the Lady Roadrunners.
Snowflake 54-Hopi 32
The Snowflake Lady Lobos defeated the Hopi Lady Bruins 54-32 on Friday to earn a spot against Winslow later that night. Snowflake led 12-8 after the first period and put together a commanding 27-12 lead at the half and a 36-16 lead at the end of three quarters. Hopi's Natasha Richardson led all scorers with 15 points. Jessica Neff paced Snowflake with 14 points.
Valley Sanders 57-Tuba City 51
The Valley Sanders Lady Pirates defeated the Tuba City Lady Warriors 57-51 in a tightly played contest on Friday. Tuba City led 13-12 after the first quarter but Valley Sanders led 24-23 at the half and 37-35 after three quarters. Kristen Quigley of Valley Sanders led all scorers with 19 points. Adrianna Nez also scored in double figures for the Lady Pirates with 10 points and Chalena Betoney scored nine for the victors. Samytha Parrish and Tate Tsingine both scored 15 points for Tuba City.
Chinle 45-Monument Valley 37
The Chinle Lady Wildcats defeated the Monument Valley Lady Mustangs 45-37 in a first round game on Friday. Monument Valley led 15-11 after the first quarter but Chinle was up 29-21 at the half and 34-29 after three quarters. Mary Claushee of Chinle was the only player to score in double figures with 19 points. Ashley Holiday led Monument Valley with nine points.
Window Rock 56-Joseph City 46
The Window Rock Lady Scouts defeated the Joseph City Lady Wildcats 56-46 in a very tightly played game Friday. Joseph City led 10-9 after the first quarter, 28-22 at the half and 36-35 after three quarters. Window Rock outscored the Lady Wildcats 21-10 in the final period for the come-from-behind win. Searra Hansen of Joseph City led all scorers with 20 points. Kristen Baldwin also scored in double figures for Joseph City with 12 points. Taylor Hill scored 10 points. Naomi Klah led Window Rock with 17 points. Arianna Sheka scored 13 points and Aspen Shepard scored 10 points for the Lady Scouts.
Winslow 48-Snowflake 18
The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Snowflake Lady Lobos 48-18 on Friday in a game whose outcome was never in doubt. The Lady Bulldogs took control quickly and led 19-4 after the first quarter and by a commanding 33-9 at the half. The margin was a whopping 45-15 after three quarters. Shandiin Armao led all scorers with 16 points, just one more than Mattea Begaii, who finished with 15 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
