Winslow High Volleyball Team starts tough season

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow High School volleyball team has started its 2012 season with match losses to Snowflake, Coconino and Window Rock and a win of five games, loss of six and tie of one in the Payson Tournament.

The team is coached by head coach Julie Thomas, Mady Hayes and Antoinette Pogue on the varsity, Aza Thompson on the junior varsity and Allen Leonard on the freshmen.

The players are freshman Jaycey Sangster, sophomores Ashleigh Johnson, Elizabeth Lozano and Shandiin Armao; juniors Renee Bollin, Tannon Tom, Kayla Brady, Katonya Begay and Marcella Joe and senior Danielle Begaye.

On Aug. 29 in Snowflake, Snowflake defeated Winslow three games to two. Snowflake won the first game 25-12, lost the next 25-23 and won the third 25-14. Winslow won the fourth game 28-26 to force a tie. Snowflake won the tiebreaker 15-7.

On Aug. 30 in Winslow, Coconino defeated the Lady Bulldogs three games to one. Winslow won the first game 25-22 but lost the next three by scores of 29-27, 25-17 and 25-14.

The Lady bulldogs finished third in the consolation bracket at the Payson Tournament on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. Winslow won five games, lost six and tied one. Marcella Joe was named to the All-Tournament Team.

On Sept. 4, Window Rock defeated Winslow three games to two in Window Rock. Winslow won the first game 25-19 but lost the second 25-20 and the third 26-24. The Lady Bulldogs won the fourth game 25-23 but lost the tiebreaker 15-9.

Winslow was to play Blue Ridge on Thursday, Sept. 6 at Pinetop and meet Coconino in Flagstaff on Monday, Sept. 10. They were to host Snowflake on Thursday, Sept. 13 and play at Holbrook on Tuesday, Sept. 18.
