Norman Stevens honored with 'Unsung Hero' Award

TUCSON, Ariz. - Norman Stevens, Licensed Independent Substance Abuse Counselor (LISAC), was named an Unsung Hero at the 44th Annual Southwestern School for Behavioral Health Studies in Tucson, Ariz. on Aug. 22.

Stevens received his award for his 17 years of service as manager of the Page, AZ detox unit. During that time he also provided traditional Dine' counseling and weekly sweat lodge for recovering alcoholics. He became Arizona State LISAC) in 2004.

When the Page detox unit closed last year he became a Primary Substance Abuse Counselor for the Navajo Nation's Tse'Nani'A' Hi' (Rainbow Bridge) residential treatment program in Page. He also continues to provide Traditional Dine' counseling, weekly sweat lodge, talking circle, and smudging ceremony to recovering Dine' clients at Tse'Nani'A'Hi'.

Stevens' service to alcoholics in need of detox is well known. He received multiple nominations for the Unsung Hero award from among the 950 addictions counselors attending the conference.
