WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Monument Valley Mustangs will travel to Winslow on Friday for a game that could decide the fate of both teams regarding their playoff positions.
The Mustangs are undefeated at 8-0 for the season but may still be considered underdogs to the 5-3 Bulldogs who have played a much tougher schedule.
Monument Valley defeated the Ganado Hornets 47-6 at Kayenta Oct. 15 to stay undefeated. Winslow picked up a surprisingly easy 42-14 victory over the Coconino Panthers Oct. 15 at Winslow. Coconino had been considered a major threat to the Bulldogs.
Two of Winslow's losses were to highly ranked teams regarded as championship contenders. Those losses were to the 6-2 Snowflake Lobos 43-17 and the undefeated Show Low Cougars 40-7. Snowflake's two losses came down to a single point to Show Low and to the top ranked Blue Ridge Yellowjackets. Winslow's other loss was an upset 18-10 by the Flagstaff Eagles.
Monument Valley's wins include victories over such smaller and less feared opponents as Pinon, Rough Rock Community School, Many Farms and Red Mesa. Close wins over Chinle and Page were the team's toughest challenges. They have a game with the Window Rock Scouts at Window Rock after the Winslow game. That could also be a test against the 4-4 Scouts.
Winslow has the top ranked Blue Ridge Yellowjackets at Pinetop left on their schedule. The team will need a win against Monument Valley to get a home game in the playoffs and may need such a win just to qualify.
In other games of importance in the playoff picture and northern area football were a number of close games and some convincing blowouts. Chinle moved to 4-4 with a 48-6 win over Rough Rock Community School.
Walden Grove got by the Holbrook Roadrunners 14-12 at home. Pinon edged Valley Sanders 26-18.
The Snowflake Lobos improved their record to 6-2 with a surprisingly difficult 14-7 win over the Round Valley Elks at Snowflake.
