WINSLOW, Ariz - Alice's Place, a local domestic violence shelter serving Northern Arizona, received a $20,000 grant from the Mary Kay Foundation. In observation of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, the Mary Kay Foundation awards the grants to more than 150 domestic violence shelters across the country for a total of $3 million.

Alice's Place will use the grant to provide critical support for its recently opened shelter, Laura's House.

"We are so grateful to The Mary Kay Foundation for this grant. We opened our new shelter, Laura's House less than one year ago," said Theresa Warren, Alice's Place Inc. executive director. "This grant will be used to help with the first year's operational expenses and developing programs to help educate and aide in the recovery process of our clients and their children. We are a small organization in a small community but have seen the large impact we can make. This grant will help us in accomplishing the shared goal of helping victims and survivors of domestic violence."

Alice's Place promotes individual empowerment by providing a safe, respectful, non-judgmental environment with confidential choices and culturally sensitive support to victims and survivors of domestic violence through shelter, advocacy, education and resources.

"The Mary Kay Foundation is committed to breaking the cycle of domestic violence," said Anne Crews, Mary Kay Inc. vice president of government relations and board member for The Mary Kay Foundation. "Through our grants, we honor and support shelters across the country that are having a profound impact for women and children in their communities. Since 2000, we have granted $31 million to help domestic violence shelters meet their critical needs and support their ongoing community efforts."

About Alice's Place, Inc.

Alice's Place was established in 2000 by a group of visionaries who believed victims of domestic violence needed a safe place to call for help, support, advice, and direction when there was seemingly no way out of their desperate situation. Since that time, Alice's Place has grown from loaned office space and rented hotel rooms to our own office space, a thrift store and most importantly, a safe and comfortable shelter offering a stay of up to 90 days for women and children. In addition to shelter, we provide an array of comprehensive domestic violence services to both resident and non-resident clients. The major objectives of Alice's Place include:

• Stabilize the immediate crisis through 24-hour crisis intervention.

• Provide a safe and comfortable place for our clients to begin the healing process while developing a personal goal and action plan designed to help them move forward, increase self esteem and get back on their feet.

• Advocate on behalf of our clients to help them navigate the judicial/legal system and local resources.

• Educate our clients and raise awareness in our community of the effects of domestic violence to help stop the cycle of abuse and decrease the number and severity of domestic violence incidents.
