Early childcare providers eligible for First Things First professional rewards

Childcare center teachers, directors and family childcare home providers are eligible for a financial incentives program through First Things First (FTF) that acknowledges and rewards progressive education, educational attainment and continuous employment at a qualifying childcare facility. Award amounts range between $300 and $2,000.

To be eligible childcare providers must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, currently work 30 hours per week with children ages birth through age 5, earn $20 per hour or less, have completed a minimum of six credit hours of college coursework in Early Childhood Education Special Education or Child Development with a grade of "C" or better and have been employed a minimum of one year at their current location.

The applicant's childcare center or family care home must be in an eligible region (visit azftf.gov/regionalcouncils) and be regulated by a federal, state or tribal authority, provide services to children, ages birth through 5 years and be in good standing with regulatory agencies. There must be a demonstrated commitment to program quality through accreditation, a Quality First participating program, Quality First Wait List or have submitted an application to be rated on the Quality First Rating Scale. Other qualifications include being accredited by a national organization at a level that equals a 3-5 star rating in Quality First or currently awaiting selection for Quality First participation.

Birth certificates available

Birth certificates will be available through the Coconino County Public Health Services District. Their staff now travels to Tuba City, Page and Leupp to offer the service outside of their regular Flagstaff office hours.

Staff visits Tuba City 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. (local time) the first and third Wednesday of the month at the Coconino County District 5 Supervisors Office, 49 Maple St., one street west of Tuba City Regional Health Care Center. A Navajo translator is available.

Staff visits Page every second Wednesday of the month 10 a.m.-2 p.m. MST at the Coconino County Health Department, Northern Region Office, 467 Vista Ave.

Staff visits Leupp Chapter house the first Thursday of the month 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (local time).

Registration open at Northern Arizona Academy

Northern Arizona Academy (NAA) is currently enrolling students in grades 9-12 for the upcoming school year. NAA is a charter high school located in Winslow, and provides an alternative path to earning your high school diploma. NAA is accredited through North Central Association, and has been serving students in the Winslow, Holbrook and Navajo Reservation areas for 17 years. Transportation is provided. "A Blue Christmas" community event Dec. 8 at Fort Defiance Chapter House

Blue Bird Pinups present "A Blue Christmas" community event at the Fort Defiance Chapter House in Fort Defiance, Ariz. Dec. 8 at 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend this free holiday event featuring vendors, arts and crafts for kids, family photos and more.

Winter Wonderland Celebration at Heritage Square in Flagstaff

Flagstaff Recreation Services rings in the holiday season on Dec. 7 with its annual Winter Wonderland Celebration. Santa Claus and Mayor Nabours will travel on a fire truck to the Southside Downtowner Tower (San Francisco Street and Phoenix) to light a giant holiday wreath at 6:15 p.m.

Then, at 6:30 p.m., visitors can enjoy the Heritage Square tree lighting, crafts, holiday music, story time with the public library and visits from Santa and Mayor Nabours at Heritage Square (6 East Aspen Avenue).

The First Friday Artwalk provides the perfect opportunity for consumers to start their holiday shopping. Wheeler Park will also have its annual display of lights. All activities are free.

Classes offered for parents on student success

Parenting classes, "How to Help Your Child Succeed in School," will be led by Kate Esquirvel at Leupp Public School in Leupp. Classes will be held 9-9:30 a.m. every first and third Thursday of the month through May.

Classes will be held Dec. 6 and 20, Jan. 17, Feb. 7 and 21, March 7, April 4 and 18, and May 2 and 16.

Navajo Nation Program for Self Reliance Office closure Nov. 29-30

All Navajo Nation Program for Self Reliance (NNPSR) offices will be closed Nov. 29-30 to allow staff to participate in the first quarterly staff meeting of fiscal year 2013. Customers are encouraged to contact their caseworkers prior to these dates if they have any issues they need addressed.

Upcoming events at Tuba City Boarding School

The Office of Youth Development at Tuba City Boarding School (TCBS) is pleased to announce several upcoming events.

The Fall Youth Basketball League will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays through Nov. 29. The league will meet 5:30-8 p.m. in the TCBS gym. The league is for youth ages 6-7 and 8-10.

Teen and Alcohol and Energy Drinks Presentations

All 7th through 12th graders and Parents of Leupp Schools, Inc. (LSI) are invited to two presentations set for Nov. 21 at 9-11 a.m. in the LSI gymnasium. Guest presenters are Officer Randall Begay of Hopi Police Dept. and Sophina Yazzie of the Navajo Nation.

A community luncheon will follow the presentations at 11 a.m.
