Large crowd anjoys costume contests, scary story

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Arts Council's annual Halloween celebration took place Oct. 27 at the Winslow Chamber of Commerce/Hubbell Trading Post building. A large crowd attended, applauding 48 scary story contestants and people in costume with carved and decorated pumpkins.

The scary story contest was divided into two sections, kindergarten through the second grade and all others. Sarah Smithson, Marianne Richardson and Sam Conner judged the stories.

Kindergarten through second grade winners were:

• Emma Couchman for her story "No Such Thing as Ghosts,"

• Benjamin Couchman for his story "The Werewolf,"

• Audrey Neill for her story "Bat Fell in the Water,"

• Amber Neill for her story "Haunted House," and

• April Neill for her story "There Was Once at Haunted House."

Winners in the all others category (all fifth grade students) were:

• Sheri Decker for her story "The Boy,"

• Romeo Romero for his story "The Man,"

• Jacob LaFon for his story "Was It a Nightmare?"

• Kai Begay for his story "The Scarycrow," and

• Lesane Bolton for her story "The Pumpkin Head."

Sean Glenn, Cassie Schumacher, Dustin Key, Emmett Foster and Luke McCauley judged costumes. Contestants were divided into three groups: children under 12 years of age, children from 12 to 17 years of age;,and adults.

Tristan Mitchell, Audrey Neill and Russell Lane won in the under 12-years old category. Gay and Bebe Graymountain tied for first place in the 12 to 17 years of age group. Misty Benham, Todd Roth and April Neill won in the adult category.

There was also a team contest for costumes. Brandon Kilbourn, James Kilbourn, Jessica Kilbourn, Jennelle Layne, Russell Layne and Michael Kilbourn won first place dressed as the Scooby-Doo Gang. April Neill, Ava Neill and Amber Neill took second place dressed as female super heroes.

There were nine entries in the decorated pumpkin contest, all very well-done and interesting. Misty Benham won in the adult division. Russell Layne, Oliver Benham and Maya Benham won in the children's division.
