ESTRELLA PARK, Ariz. - The will to win and the desire to succeed defines Tuba City Boarding School's 2012 Cross Country team. The team not only competed in Arizona, but they also traveled to Colorado, and several off-reservation competitions. The team ended their season on a high note, both boys varsity and girls varsity teams took second place at the Middle School State Championships held at Estrella Park Oct. 27.
"We are proud of second place for both teams," Summer Yazzie said. "Our team gets another shot at [the] State Title next year again!"
The girls junior varsity team finished strong, coming in 11th out of 32 teams with a team including two sixth grade runners. Jaiden Melendrez from the T-Birds finished the course in 11:49.08 to take the individual championship. Tuba Public's Vaughn Jackson followed 10 seconds behind to earn the second place spot.
The T-Birds had an amazing season competing in 11 races and coming back with almost all first place finishes for their varsity boys and girls. The girls varsity team also finished in second place at the Northern Arizona Middle School Championships.
Overall, Tuba City Boarding School's Cross Country team had an amazing season and they continue to have a strong outlook with young runners filling the team and only five runners leaving the team for high school. It is safe to say that the T-Birds have put the Boarding School on the map, with yet another successful season.
