WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs edged the Monument Valley Lady Mustangs 56-53 in the first varsity game played at Kayenta on Saturday. The Monument Valley Mustangs came from behind to take the boys' game 70-63 in the nightcap.

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Monument Valley Lady Mustangs 56-53 in the first varsity game played on Saturday. The victory improved Winslow's record to an impressive 19-2 for the season and was an important win over a talented and top quality team.

Winslow led 15-13 after the first quarter and was up 32-29 at the halftime. The lead was a meager 46-42 after three quarters. The Lady Bulldogs canned four key free throws in the closing seconds to preserve the victory.

Mattea Begaii led all scorers with 25 points for the Lady Bulldogs. She was the only player in double figures for Winslow. Halle Hayes tallied eight for the victors and Corey Nez and Shandiin Armao each scored six. Freshman Heidi Nelson led Monument Valley with 13 points. Ashley Holiday was in double figures for the Lady Mustangs with 12 points and Naomi Whitehair scored nine.

The Lady Bulldogs were to host the Holbrook Lady Roadrunners on Tuesday. They will host the tough Page Lady Sand Devils on Thursday. Page is the last team to beat the Lady Bulldogs and the only Arizona team to do so. Road games against Coconino in Flagstaff on Friday and the Tuba City Lady Warriors at Tuba City on Friday, Feb. 3 will complete the regular season.

The Monument Valley Mustangs came from behind in the second half to defeat the Winslow Bulldogs 70-63 in a game played in the second varsity game on Saturday. The loss dropped Winslow's record to 11-12 for the season.

The Bulldogs led 21-23 after the first period of play and 32-22 at the half. Monument Valley cut into the margin in the third quarter but still trailed 48-43 entering the final period. The Mustangs outscored Winslow 27-15 in that period to take the victory.

Chad Keith paced Monument Valley with 25 points and tied Tyler Williams of Winslow for game high honors. Michael Goldtooth was also in double figures for Winslow with 16 points. Wyatt Tuni with 14 points and Jaron James with 13 were also in double figures for the Mustangs.

The Bulldogs were to host the Holbrook Roadrunners on Tuesday and will host the tough Page Sand Devils on Thursday. Only a pair of road games at Coconino and Tuba City remain in the regular season after the Page game.
