Lady Bulldogs win, boys lose at Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs won their game in Flagstaff on Jan. 3, but the Bulldogs boys' team lost their game. Both contests were close and probably could have gone either way.

The Lady Bulldogs edged the Flagstaff Lady Eagles 49-47 in Flagstaff on Jan. 3. The game was the first in the 2012 portion of the season and left the Lady Bulldogs with a record of 11-2 for the season.

Winslow led 20-9 after the first quarter of play but saw that margin cut to a single point of 24-23 by the intermission. Flagstaff led by two 36-34 at the end of the third quarter.

Ranita David of Flagstaff led all scorers with 17 points. Kyndell Kelly was also in double figures for the Lady Eagles with 10 points. Corey Nez was the only Lady Bulldog in double figures with 14 points but Winslow had more players score. Kiersten Nezzie had nine points for the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Bulldogs were scheduled to host Snowflake on Jan. 6 and play in Holbrook on Saturday. That game will be followed by a streak of four home games against Coconino on Jan. 10, Window Rock on Jan. 17, Blue Ridge on Jan. 19 and Flagstaff on Jan. 20.

Scoring for Winslow were Halle Hayes 5, Mattea Begaii 7, Laylane Benslow 3, Tatum Charley 1, Kiersten Nezzie 9, Corey Nez 14, Taramika Lee 5 and Shandiin Armao 5.

Scoring for Flagstaff were Kira Butler 5, Savannah Bix 5, Melissa Mahon 2, Ashleigh Begay 2, Kyndell Kelly 10, Ranita David 17 and Semaj Blanton 6.

In the boys' game the Flagstaff Eagles defeated the Winslow Bulldogs 62-54 on Jan. 3. The game was the first in the 2012 portion of the season and left the Bulldogs with a record of 8-6 for the season.

Flagstaff led 15-11 after the first quarter of play and by a narrow 31-29 at the half. The Eagles had improved their lead to 46-40 entering the final period.

Michael Goldtooth led all scorers with 16 points for Winslow. Two other Bulldogs were in double figures as Tyler Williams and Tremayne Nez both scored 13 points. Irvin Tso paced the Eagles with 14 points. Ryan Townsend with 10 points and Aaron Yazzie with 10 were also in double figures for Flagstaff which had three more players score eight points each.
