Holbrook, Snowflake only north teams left in boys' final eight

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - While half of the girls' Division III State final eight teams are former 3A North Region members and another team is from the northern part of the state, only two boys' teams in the final eight are from the north part of the state and only Holbrook is a former 3A North Region member.

Holbrook entered the tournament as the top seeded team and after a first round bye defeated Safford 69-32. Safford had beaten Payson 64-60 on Tuesday in Safford before losing to Holbrook on Saturday in Flagstaff. Holbrook was to meet North Pointe in Prescott on Monday. North Pointe was seeded eighth and had beaten Valley Christian in Flagstaff on Saturday 61-57. Valley Christian had defeated Camp Verde 68-53 in a first round game.

Snowflake was seeded third and after a bye defeated the Florence Gophers 81-59 in Flagstaff on Saturday. The Gophers edged Northwest Christian 65-64 in overtime in their first round game. Snowflake was to meet Scottsdale Christian on Monday. Scottsdale Christian was seeded 22 but upset Empire 68-53 at Empire on Tuesday and eighth seeded Fountain Hills 71-54 in Flagstaff on Friday.

Former 3A North Region member Window Rock was seeded fifth but lost its only game 58-48 to Rio Rico. Rio Rico was seeded 12th and bested Pinon 69-54. Rio Rico was to meet Thatcher on Monday. Thatcher was seeded fourth and after a bye defeated Tombstone 71-37. Tombstone was seeded 22nd and had upset 13th seeded Globe 72-61 in an opening round game.

  Former 3A North Region member Tuba City lost its only game 66-30 to Parker at Parker on Tuesday. Tuba City was seeded 23rd. Parker upset seventh seeded Alchesay 56-39 and was to play Gilbert Christian at Prescott on Monday. Gilbert Christian was seeded second and after a bye defeated St. Johns 77-62. St. Johns had topped Valley Sanders 77-62 at Valley Sanders.
