Four former 3A North Girls' teams in final eight

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Four girls' basketball teams from the old 3A North Region won their first game or two in the Arizona Division III State Tournament in Flagstaff on Saturday or, in some cases, at their home court or the home of an opponent. The results leave half of the eight quarterfinalists as former 3A North members and one other from the northern region of the state.

Chinle came into the tournament as the 21st seed but defeated Benson 64-43 at Benson on Wednesday. Benson was seeded 12th. On Saturday, the Lady Wildcats got another upset win by topping Thatcher 50-41. Chinle was to meet Camp Verde on Tuesday at Prescott.

Window Rock was to meet Tuba City in Prescott on Tuesday.

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs were rated seventh and had a first round bye. Winslow avenged a Sectional Tournament loss by defeating the Many Farms Lady Lobos 45-41 in a thriller on Saturday. Many Farms had ousted the only former 3A North Region team to lose a first round game when they beat the Monument Valley Lady Mustangs 57-41 at Many Farms. Many Farms had been seeded 10th and Monument Valley 23. Winslow was to play second seeded Valley Christian, a 58-43 winner over 18th seeded Round Valley on Saturday. Round Valley had defeated 15th seeded Gilbert Christian at Gilbert on Wednesday in the opening round.

The Page Lady Sand Devils were the top seed in the tournament and after a first round bye met the Alchesay Lady Falcons, seeded 16th and a 53-49 winner over 17th seeded Estrella Foothills. Page, also a team from the northern part of Arizona, defeated Alchesay a55-33 on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals in Prescott on Tuesday against Buckeye. Buckeye was a sixth seed and defeated Fountain Hills 58-39 earlier on Saturday. Buckeye also had a first round bye. Fountain Hills, a ninth seed, had beaten Parker, a 24th seed, 58-39 in a first round game on Wednesday at Fountain Hills.

In the only games at Flagstaff on Saturday not involving former 3A North Region teams Camp Verde beat Safford 48-21 in a surprise. Camp Verde was seeded 13th and had bested 20th seeded Cortez 56-31. Safford was seeded fourth. The winner of the Camp Verde-Chinle game will likely be the lowest seed to reach the semifinals.
