Winslow basketball teams easily get by Hopi
Lady Bulldogs win 70-15, boys win 74-36

WINSLOW, Ariz. - Both Winslow High School basketball teams collected easy victories over their Hopi High School rivals in Winslow on Nov. 27.

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Hopi Lady Bruins 70-15. The win was Winslow's second in as many games and the outcome was never in doubt. The Navajo-Hopi Observer went to print before their rematch in Polacca on Tuesday.

The Lady Bulldogs left no doubt who was going to win in the first quarter when they built a 30-0 lead. The margin was 46-7 at the intermission and 65-12 after three quarters of play.

Shandiin Armao led all scorers with 29 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Halle Hayes finished in double figures with 11 points and Laylane Benslow finished with nine points. Natasha Richardson led the Lady Bruins with five points.

Up next, the Lady Bulldogs will participate in the Gallup Invitational Tournament in Gallup, N.M. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Gallup Tournament is usually a major challenges for the Lady Bulldogs.

In the boys' game, the contest was a little closer but was also never in doubt.

The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Hopi Bruins 74-36. The win was Winslow's second in as many outings.

The Bulldogs built a 20-9 double-digit lead by the end of the first quarter and were up 36-22 at the intermission. The lead was a commanding 58-34 going into the final period of play.

Michael Goldtooth led all scorers with 32 points for the Bulldogs. Stevin Nelson (12 points) and Vincenzio Sells (10 points) were also in double figures for Winslow. Blake Sekequeptewa led Hopi with 13 points while Stephen Tootsie scored nine for the Bruins. Winslow had nine players score to only six for the Bruins.

The Bulldogs hosted the Tate's Shootout Tournament from Nov. 29 - Dec. 1. Scores and stats for the tournament will be posted online or in next week's edition.
