Route 66 Classic Car Show benefits local charities

The Route 66 Car Club is having the Eighth Annual Charity Car Show Sept. 7-9 in Wheeler Park in downtown Flagstaff. On Sept. 8 425 classic cars will be displayed in the downtown area. They will be competing for over 50 prizes.

There will be over 50 baskets raffled throughout the day with 100 percent of the proceeds going to local charities.

There will also be a silent auction occurring Sept. 8 in conjunction with the car show. To view these silent auction items come to the booth directly in front of city hall backing Wheeler Park. Auction items include memorabilia from Arizona sports teams, Native American items and northern Arizona surprises.

District II Council Session will begin at 9 a.m. Sept. 8 at Tuba City Chapter in Tuba City.

The Western Navajo Agency Council session begins at 9 a.m. Sept. 22 in Coalmine Canyon, Ariz.

Early childcare providers eligible for REWARD$

Childcare center teachers, directors and family childcare home providers are eligible for a financial incentives program through First Things First (FTF) that acknowledges and rewards progressive education, educational attainment and continuous employment at a qualifying childcare facility. Award amounts range between $300 and $2,000.

Applications are accepted Sept. 4, starting at 9 a.m., through midnight on Oct. 31. To be eligible childcare providers must be at least 18 years of age; have a high school diploma or GED; currently work 30 hours per week with children ages birth through age 5; earn $20 per hour or less; have completed a minimum of six credit hours of college coursework in Early Childhood Education Special Education or Child Development with a grade of "C" or better; and have been employed a minimum of one year at their current location.

The applicant's childcare center or family care home must be in an eligible region (visit azftf.gov/regionalcouncils and be regulated by a federal, state or tribal authority; provide services to children, ages birth through 5 years; and be in good standing with regulatory agencies. There must be a demonstrated commitment to program quality through accreditation, a Quality First participating program, Quality First Wait List or have submitted an application to be rated on the Quality First Rating Scale. Other qualifications include being accredited by a national organization at a level that equals a 3-5 star rating in Quality First or currently awaiting selection for Quality First participation.

St. Jude Food Bank in Tuba City is opening a farmers' market. The market will be open every Wednesday 5:30-7:30 p.m. through Oct. 10.

Local farmers are encouraged to sell crops at the market. There will also be cooking demonstrations, health screenings and several informational booths at the market as well. For more information, call (928) 283-6886.

Birth certificates available

Birth certificates will be available through the Coconino County Public Health Services District. Their staff now travels to Tuba City, Page, and Leupp to offer the service outside of their regular Flagstaff Office hours.

Staff visits Tuba City 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. (local time) the first and third Wednesday of the month at the Coconino Country District 5 Supervisors Office, 49 Maple St., one street west of Tuba City Regional Health Care Center. A Navajo translator is available.

Staff visits Page every second Wednesday of the month 10 a.m.-2 p.m. MST at the Coconino County Health Department, Northern Region Office, 467 Vista Ave.

Staff visits Leupp Chapter house the first Thursday of the month 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (local time).

Workshop for farmers, ranchers tomorrow

A workshop on animal disease traceability and how to manage a quality ranch and farm will be offered tomorrow at the Hopi Cultural Center Conference Room, Second Mesa, Ariz.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. The workshop will be held 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. All Hopi-Tewa Ranchers and Farmers are invited to attend this very important workshop.

The workshop is hosted by the Hopi Conservation District (HCD) Indian Nations Conservation Alliance, United States Department of Agriculture, NRCS, APHIS and Hopi Tribal Veterinary Program.

Opening remarks will be presented by Hopi Vice Chairman Herman Honanie. Workshop presenters include Dr. Terry Clark, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service; Brian Thomas, coordinator, Indian Nations Conservation Alliance (INCA); Dan Carroll, district conservationist; Pam Lalo, Hopi Veterinary Program; and Harold Joseph Jr., president of Hopi Conservation District.

Miss Navajo Council, Inc. and Navajo Nation Division of Transportation proudly presents the 60th Anniversary Miss Navajo Nation Titleholders Fundraising Gala. The celebration begins at 6 p.m. Sept. 7 at Senator John Pinto Conference Center, NNDOT Building No. 16, Old Coalmine Rd. in Tse Bonito, N.M. The event will be held during the Navajo Nation Fair.

ABND Youth Convention this weekend

The 11th Annual ABNDN Youth Convention will be held Saturday and Sunday in Shonto. The event is hosted by District 11 and is held at milepost 361 on Highway 160 (near the junction of highways 160 and 98).

The event begins with an early morning flag raising ceremony. Highlights of the event include educational presentations for students and parents, trail ride, horsemanship seminar, arts and crafts, school supplies for students and potluck style meals. Bring chairs and bottled water.
