WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs will journey to Camp Verde on Friday, Aug. 17 for a controlled scrimmage with the Camp Verde Cowboys. After the controlled scrimmage the Bulldogs will open their regular season with a pair of road games against the Sedona Red Rock Scorpions on Friday, Aug. 24 and their archrival Holbrook Roadrunners on Friday, Aug.31. All Winslow varsity games are scheduled for 7 p.m. kickoffs both home games and those on the road.
Winslow will likely be favored in its first five games but will get considerably tougher in the final five contests. Probably the toughest teams on the schedule are the defending State Champion Blue Ridge Yellowjackets, State Runners-Up Show Low and the Snowflake Lobos. All are Winslow opponents in the second half of the season.
The regular season begins against the Sedona Red Rock Scorpions in Sedona. Sedona Red Rock finished the previous season with four wins and five losses. Winslow defeated the Scorpions 34-20 last season.
Next comes a road game with the Holbrook Roadrunners who are definitely in a rebuilding situation. Holbrook is coming off a disappointing season with just one win and eight losses. The Roadrunners fell to Winslow 48-6 in Winslow last year.
The first home game for the Bulldogs will be on Friday, Sept. 7 against the Flagstaff Eagles. Winslow defeated Flagstaff 48-15 last season as the Eagles won only one game and lost nine.
It will be back on the road for the Bulldogs on Sept. 14 when they journey to Ganado to meet the Hornets. Winslow blistered the Hornets 52-12 last season. Ganado finish the season with an even .500 record of five wins and five losses.
Winslow's Homecoming Game will be on Friday, Sept. 21 against the Chinle Wildcats. Winslow defeated Chinle 48-12 last season in which the Wildcats wound up with a respectable 6-3 record.
Things get a lot tougher for the Bulldogs in the second half of the season when they host the always formidable Snowflake Lobos on Friday, Sept. 28. The Lobos pounded the Bulldogs 48-0 at Snowflake last season and had a 9-1 record on their way to the playoffs.
On Friday, Oct. 5, the Bulldogs will face the Show Low Cougars in Show Low. Show Low beat the Bulldogs 28-24 last season and wound up with an 8-2 record on their way to the playoffs. The Cougars also defeated Winslow in the playoffs 35-28 before losing to Blue Ridge in the Championship Game.
The Bulldogs will host the Coconino Panthers on Friday, Oct. 12. Winslow nipped the Panthers 21-13 in a close game last season. Coconino finished the season with an even 505 record.
The last home game for the Bulldogs will be on Friday, Oct. 19 when they host the Monument Valley Mustangs. Last season Winslow defeated Monument Valley 60-12. The Mustangs ended their season with a respectable 7-3 record. Winslow also defeated the Mustangs 58-26 in the playoffs.
The final regular season game will be a real test against the defending State Champion Blue Ridge Yellowjackets at Pinetop on Friday, Oct. 26. Blue Ridge bested Winslow 45-7 last season. The Yellowjackets were an undefeated 13-0 last season and are always one of the top high school teams in the country.
Should the Bulldogs make the state playoffs the season would continue at times and places to be determined later.
