Bulldogs on winning streak
Winslow defeats Williams 14-2; Page 14-12 and 21-2: and Hopi 14-2
GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs baseball team got hot after spring break and won four straight games to improve their record to 10-3 for the young season. Winslow took its winning streak into the Wolves Invitational Tournament at Estrella Foothills March 30-31.
The Bulldogs defeated Williams 14-2 on March 22, then took a double-header from Page on Saturday 14-12 and 21-2 before besting Hopi 14-2 on Tuesday. All of the games were played at Vargas Field in Winslow.
In the 14-2 win over Williams, Caleb Layden got the victory with relief from Chris Garrett. Winslow scored five runs in the first inning and four more in both the second and third frames. Colton Corum was three for three with a double. Jeff Gonzales and Aaron Martin were one for one. Chris Garrett and Vittorio Sells were one for two.
The first game against Page on Saturday was a thrilling 14-12 Winslow win on a grand slam home run by Matt Smith In the bottom of the seventh inning. Smith also got the win in relief of Layden and Martin. He was three for four at the plate with a home run and five runs batted in. Caleb Layden was two for three. Vittorio Sells and Chris Garrett were two for four and Matt Cirre was one for four.
The second game against Page was a 21-2 rout with Chris Garrett getting the win on a two hitter with both of the Sand Devil runs being unearned. Matt Smith was four for four with a home run and a double. Garrett was two for two. Caleb Layden and Jon Oso were one for one with doubles. Sam Setalla was one for one with a home run. Adrian Montoya was two for four with a home run and a triple. Matt Cirre, Aaron Martin and Vicenzio Sells were one for two with Martin having a double. Vittorio Sells was one for three with a triple.
In the 14-2 win over Hopi on Tuesday, Jon Oso got the win in relief. Adrian Montoya was two for two. Vittorio Sells was three for four. Caleb Layden and Matt Cirre were two for three with Layden having a pair of doubles and Cirre one. Aaron Martin was one for two.
The Bulldogs are slated to play in the Wolves Invitational Tournament at Estrella Foothills. They were to play Chino Valley on April 5, Show Low and Dysart on April 6 and two teams to be determined on April 7. Winslow will host Coconino on April 10 and Snowflake on April 12 before going to Joseph City for a double-header on April 14.
