Winslow Bulldogs stomp Chinle Wildcats 47-12

 WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs remained undefeated with a 47-12 victory over the Chinle Wildcats at Chinle on Friday. The win improved Winslow's record to 5-0 and dropped Chinle to 3-2 for the season. The season gets much tougher next week when they meet the Snowflake Lobos at Snowflake.

The Winslow defense got the first score when Henry Montiel intercepted a Wildcat pass and ran it back 35 yards to the end zone. Jonathan Oso booted the conversion for a 7-0 lead with just over nine minutes left in the first quarter.

Chinle got on the score board on a 77 yard pass from Anton Wheeler to Rain Brady on their next possession. The Wildcats had been inside their own ten yard line early in the possession. The conversion pass failed and Winslow led 7-6.

The Bulldog defense avoided disaster by holding Chinle without a first down after losing a fumble on the kickoff following the Wildcat touchdown. Chinle held until James Martinez hit Brennen James on a fourth down, 22 yard scoring pass. Oso booted the conversion for a 14-6 lead with just over two minutes left in the period.

 James Martinez hit Henry Montiel for an apparent touchdown on a 16 yard pass but the score was negated by a penalty. Martinez then hit Brennen James for another score with a 25 yard scoring pass. The conversion increased the lead to 21-6 with over nine minutes left in the half.

Chinle threatened again and but turned the ball on downs late in the first half. The Wildcats still managed to score and cut the lead to 21-12 lead at the end of the half. The game had been close for the first half but Winslow scored three unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter to put the game out of sight.

James Martinez teamed up with Brennen James again on a 12 yard pass early in the third quarter. The successful conversion increased the lead to 28-12. Midway through the third period James Martinez hit Henry Montiel on a short two-yard scoring pass that gave the Bulldogs a 34-12 lead after the conversion kick was blocked.

 James Martinez hit Henry Montiel to increase the lead to 41-12. Winslow led 47-12 going into the final quarter.

The Winslow reserves played the fourth period which was scoreless as the Bulldogs won the game 47-12.

The Winslow junior varsity team had defeated the Chinle junior varsity 50-6 on Thursday at Winslow.
