Winslow Volleyball Team starts season

The Winslow High School volleyball team got off to a fast and active start of its 2011 season. The Lady Bulldogs opened the season with a three game to two loss to Snowflake on Aug. 31 at Winslow. Snowflake won the first game 25-18 but Winslow won the second and third games 25-16 and 25-23. Snowflake came back to win the last two games 25-11 and 15-9 to take the match. On Sept. 1, the Lady Bulldogs lost a match to Coconino in Flagstaff three games to none. The Lady Panthers won the match by scores of 27-25, 25-18 and 25-10.

After the opening matches, the Lady Bulldogs participated in the Payson Invitational Tournament on Sept. 2 and 3. Winslow came in third place in the consolation bracket. In pool play, they lost their first three games to Coconino 30-19, Florence 24-22 and Agua Fria 27-23. Winslow then defeated Safford 28-27 and Ash Fork 30-18. They then lost to Ganado 30-20 and Page 30-23 before winning their last pool play game 29-25 over Window Rock.

In consolation bracket play Winslow defeated Northland Prep two games to one with a 25-17 win, a 26-24 loss and a 24-16 win. They defeated Ganado two games to none by scores of 25-16 and 25-17. Page defeated Winslow in two games by scores of 25-18 and 25-21. Ganado then got revenge by defeating the Lady Bulldogs two games to one. Winslow won the first game 25-10 but lost the next two 27-25 and 25-13.

The Winslow High School volleyball team consists of seniors Tatum Charley, Tara Wilson, Taramika Lee, Robina Villanueva, Kiersten Nezzie and Corey Nez; juniors Danielle Begaye and Jamie Bollin; sophomores Halle Hayes, Renee Bollin, Jaleisa Hayes, Marcella Joe and Tannon Tom and freshman Shandiin Armao.

In summer action, Winslow finished third in a tournament in Winslow with nine schools and 17 teams, finished fourth in a Blue Ridge tournament with 17 schools and 30 tams and finished third in a tournament at Tuba City.
