Bulldogs fall to Lobos
Winslow 5-1 for season
SNOWFLAKE, Ariz. - The Snowflake Lobos defeated the Winslow Bulldogs 38-0 in Snowflake on Friday. The loss was the first of the season for the Bulldogs and dropped their record to 5-1 for the season. Snowflake improved to 5-1 for the season with a 24-7 loss to undefeated Blue Ridge as the only blemish on their record. The win showed that the Lobos are likely one of the top three or four best teams in their division along with such powers as Blue Ridge and Show Low.
Winslow still is a likely playoff team but has a tough schedule for the rest of the season with Show Low coming to Winslow on Friday, Coconino still to play in Flagstaff and Blue Ridge coming to Winslow in the regular season closing game. Monument Valley is also left on the schedule. The Bulldogs need to win at least two of those games to reach the playoffs and three to be in good shape.
Snowflake took the opening kickoff and drove 76 yards in 12 plays to score on a seven yard run by quarterback Chase Walden. The conversion by Hunter Farr was good, giving the Lobos a 7-0 lead. Snowflake had another long drive, which was turned away on an interception by Henry Montiel at the Winslow 10 yard line. The first period ended with Snowflake leading 7-0.
The Lobos built on their lead quickly in the second period as Chase Walden hit Doug Brimhall on a 21 pass with 11:46 left in the quarter to increase the Snowflake lead to 14-0 after the successful conversion. That score completed a 65 yard drive.
Brit Smith ran five yards for a Snowflake touchdown to complete a nine play, 83 yard drive. The conversion increased the Lobo lead to 21-0. Hunter Farr missed a 46 yard field goal attempt in the final minutes of the half which ended with the Lobos leading 21-0.
The Winslow defense stifled a Lobo drive into a scoring threat early in the third quarter. Snowflake still got the only score of the third quarter on to build a 28-0 lead after the conversion. The score came on a nine-yard pass from Walden to Jake Shumway to complete an 81-yard drive.
Snowflake had a touchdown negated by a penalty erasing a 70 yard pass from Chase Walden to Rick Smith early in the final period. Chase Walden ran eight yards for a touchdown midway through the quarter to increase the lead to a commanding 35-0.
After Winslow had muffed the only Snowflake punt of the night Hunter Farr booted a 31 yard field goal to make the final score 38-0 after the Lobos held the Winslow offense one last time.
The Lobos dominated most of the game gaining 501 yards to 165 for the Bulldogs. Snowflake had a balanced offense with 261 yards rushing and 240 passing.
The Bulldogs will continue the tough part of their schedule on Friday when they host the defending Arizona State 3A Conference Champion Show Low Cougars. The Cougars cruised past the Holbrook Roadrunners 51-8 to improve their record to 5-1 for the season.
