Winslow Lady Bulldogs second in state

PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs finished second in the state softball tournament to lead all teams from the 3A North Region. No other softball team from the region won a game in the tournament. The Holbrook Roadrunners got to the semi-finals of the state baseball tournament to lead the region in that sport. The Roadrunners were the only 3A North Region baseball team to win a game in the tournament.

The Estrella Foothills Lady Wolves defeated the Winslow Lady Bulldogs 7-5 in a wild Arizona State Softball Championship Game played on Saturday at the Rose Mofford Complex in Phoenix. The win reversed the results from 2010 when Winslow edged the Lady Wolves for the championship and was only Winslow's second loss to an Arizona team, both to Estrella Foothills. The other loss was in the Payson Invitational Tournament Championship Game. The loss ended Winslow's season with a 31-6 record.

Estrella Foothills took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on three walks and a single by Karen Gifford. Winslow tied the score in the bottom of the second on a single by Jaleisa Hayes, a wild pitch, a run scoring ground out by Taylor Baca and a single by Becca Perez. The Lady Wolves went up 2-1 in the top of the third on an error, a walk and a run scoring single by Lenora Bradfford.

The Lady Bulldogs scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. Jaleisa Hayes singled, Megan Lymer walked and both scored on a triple by Becca Perez who scored on a single by Gabby Stacey.

Estrella Foothills tied the game in the top of the fifth on five hits. Ashley Godfrey led off with a double but was thrown out trying to steal third. Tatum Reedy, Kasia Smith, Lenora Bradfford and Karen Gifford all singled to tie the game. The Lady Wolves had a bigger sixth inning when they scored three runs on four hits to take a 7-4 lead. Morgan Brown and Sarah Trammell singled and scored on a double by Ashley Godfrey who scored on a single by Kasia Smith.

Winslow had opportunities in their final two innings, scoring in the sixth to cut the lead to the eventual final 7-5. Becca Perez singled, there was an error and Gabby Stacey singled in that frame. The Lady Bulldogs loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't bring home a run.

Haley Hayes took the loss giving up seven runs on 11 hits and two walks with two strikeouts in five plus innings. Mallory Smith worked two innings in relief and gave up no runs on one hit while fanning two.

Kasia Smith went the distance for Estrella Foothills and gave up five runs, four of which were earned on 1 hits and one walk. She fanned three.

Jaleisa Hayes and Becca Perez were three for four for Winslow with Perez having a triple. Mireya Ulibarri was two for four. Arianna Huerta was one for two. Gabby Stacey was one for three and Haley Hayes was one for four.

Ashley Godfrey and Lenora Bradfford were two for three for Estrella Foothills with both of Godfrey's hits being doubles. Karen Gifford and Kasia Smith were two for four. Tatum Reedy was one for two. Sarah Trammell was one for three. Morgan Brown and C.J. Broadbent were one for four.

On Friday the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Safford Lady Bulldogs 4-1 in the semi-finals of the softball tournament. The win sent Winslow into the Championship Game with a brilliant record of 31-5. The Lady Bulldogs were to face Estrella Foothills on Saturday in the Championship Game. Estrella Foothills beat Snowflake 6-5 to reach the finals.

Haley Hayes was magnificent on the mound for the Lady Bulldogs holding Safford to just one run on three hits. Winslow made the most of its four hits, scoring all four of its runs on three of those hits in the bottom of the first inning. From there it was Hayes holding Safford scoreless until the top of the seventh and final inning when they finally plated a run. There was also an error in the all important bottom of the first.

Gabby Stacey and Hale Hayes singled, there was a hit batsman and Becca Perez doubled in the first inning as Winslow scored all four of its runs.

The Holbrook Roadrunners baseball team defeated the Winslow Bulldogs 13-8 on Friday, May 6 and Empire 9-5 on Saturday, May 7 to reach the semi-finals where they lost to Estrella Foothills 3-2.
