Bulldogs beat Hornets in Regional Tournament

The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Ganado Hornets 15-1 in a first round game of the 3A North Region Baseball Tournament played in Winslow on Tuesday, April 26. The win improved Winslow's record to 17-10 for the season and set up a second round game against the Holbrook Roadrunners, 21-1 winners over Chinle in a first round game played at Holbrook on that same Tuesday.  Winslow and Holbrook were to meet at 2 p.m. on Friday (today) at Winslow. The other semi-final game was to be played at 5 p.m. between regular season champion Window Rock and Monument Valley, a 7-5 winner over Tuba City. The Arizona State 3A Conference Tournament will be played in Phoenix on Friday and Saturday.

Winslow Coach Art Griffith used five pitchers in the 15-1 over Ganado and they did not allow an earned run on just two hits and four walks. Avery Dashee, James Martinez, Sam Setalla, Jon Bollin and Matt Cirre each worked an inning in the game which was ended due to the 10 run mercy rule.

Winslow scored three runs in the first inning on a triple by Vittorio Sells, singles by Rhett Hardy and Johnny Woods and a walk. Ganado scored in the top of the second inning on a double, a single and an error. The Bulldogs scored six times in the bottom of the second inning on singles by James Martinez and Colton Corum, a triple by Jevon Estelle, two walks and an error. Six more runs in the third inning for the Bulldogs ended the scoring. That rally included singles by Vittorio Sells, Colton Corum and Rhett Hardy and doubles by Matt Smith, Chris Garrett and Vicenzio Sells and a triple by Jevon Estelle.

Johnny Woods was three for three with a double. Rhett Hardy was two for two. James Martinez was one for one.  Vittorio Sells, Colton Corum, Matt Smith, Jevon Estelle and Chris Garrett were all two for three.  Sells Smith and Garrett each had a triple and Estelle had two triples. Vicenzio Sells was one for two.
