Lady Bulldogs start season beating Tuba City, Greyhills

TUBA CITY, Ariz. - The Winslow Lady Bulldogs opened their 2011 season with a 14-1 win over the Tuba City Lady Warriors at Tuba City on March 2 and then pounded the Greyhills Lady Knights 23-0 on Monday, March 7 at Tuba City.

In their first game the defending Arizona State 3A Conference Champions opened with a five run top of the first inning and were never headed. Junior Kelly Pugh worked the first three innings and allowed one unearned run on no hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Senior Mallory Smith worked the last two innings and allowed no runs on one hit and one hit batsman while fanning four.

Winslow plated the five first inning runs on singles by Mireya Ulibarri, Becca Perez and Jaleisa Hayes, a triple by Haley Hayes, two walks and two errors. Tuba City cut the lead to 5-1 on an error and a stolen base. The Lady Bulldogs scored three in the second, one in the third and fourth and four in the fifth to bring the 10 run mercy rule into effect.

Haley Hayes was two for two with a triple. Melissa Jacobs was two for three. Mireya Ulibarri was two for five. Megan Lymer was one for one with a triple. Mallory Smith, Arianna Huerta and Renee Bollin were all one for one. Becca Perez was one for three. Gabby Stacey was one for four.

In the game against Greyhills, the Lady Bulldogs pounded the Greyhills Lady Knights 23-0. The win was Winslow's second in as many game and was shortened to five innings due to the 10 run mercy rule.

Halley Hayes got the win, working the first three innings and not allowing a hit or a walk. She fanned seven batters. Taylor Baca worked the final two innings and hit a batter, but allowed no hits or runs. She fanned eight batters.

Winslow scored 11 runs in the first innings and added to their commanding lead in each of the following four frames.

Megan Lymer was three for three. Gabby Stacey, Mireya Ulibarri, Melissa Jacobs and Becca Perez were all three for four. Mallory Smith and Arianna Huerta were two for three. Kelly Pugh was two for two. Baca, Jaleisa Hayes, Jaime Bollin and Dallas Zamora were all one for one with Baca having the only home run of the game. Renee Bollin was one for two.

The Lady Bulldogs were to play at Payson on Thursday and host Valley Sanders on Saturday for their first home game. They were to play at Chinle on Tuesday and will participate In the Payson Invitational Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
