TUBA CITY, Ariz. - The staff of the Tuba City Fire Department must have been good because they got what they wanted for Christmas - a brand new fire station. After fire damaged the previous station, the fire crew was forced to set up a temporary location in a travel trailer and mobile office.

According to Lt. Becenti, much of the resources that paid for the new fire station came from outside donations. Many fire departments across the state also donated the travel trailers and lent equipment while the fire department was being rebuilt. Becenti added that the fire engine damaged in the fire would also be back in commission in the near future.

Many times funding from the tribe only covers the minimum such as weekly wages but after the 40 hour work week the employees become volunteers and are not paid. Much credit is given to these firefighters that put their lives on the line without any compensation or insurance at times.

Coconino County Supervisor Lena Fowler held a Fourth of July event to help raise funds for the fire department with support from the communities and outside organizations. Because of her efforts and the generosity of the community, the fire department was able to get back on its feet.

This is great news for a service that is crucial to the Tuba City and surrounding communities.
