Window Rock, Monument Valley, Tuba City girls advance to semi-finals
PRESCOTT, Ariz. - The 3A North Region girls' basketball teams enjoyed great success in the quarterfinals of the Arizona State 3A Conference Basketball Championship Tournament played at Prescott on Tuesday, Feb. 22. Window Rock pounded Snowflake 51-26 to advance to the semi-finals. Monument Valley defeated fellow 3A North Region member Holbrook 70-56 and Tuba City defeated another 3A North Region rival Chinle 60-35.
The Window Rock Lady Scouts had no trouble with Snowflake as they hammered the Lady Lobos 57-26. Window Rock led 24-4 after the first quarter and 34-15 at the half. The margin was 47-16 after three quarters. Ashley Mitchell was the only player in double figures for either team with 13 points for Window Rock but eight lady Scouts scored to only four Lady Lobos. Window Rock was to meet Safford on Friday in the semi-finals Safford beat Estella Foothills 69-59 in their quarter finals game.
Monument Valley defeated Holbrook 70-56 to advance. Monument Valley led 13-6 after the first quarter, 29-22 at the half and 50-42 after three quarters. McKara Kescoli led all scorers with 18 points for the Lady Mustangs. Anjilique Black with 16 points and Naomi Whitehair with 12 were also in double figures for Monument Valley. Aaren Billy led Holbrook with 11 points.
Tuba City pounded Chinle 60-35 but details of that game were not available at press time. The Lady Warriors were to meet the Lady Mustangs in the semi-finals on Friday in Glendale.
The 3A North Region had six teams in the state tournament and none lost a game to a non-regional foe. The three teams eliminated were all ousted by other 3A North Region teams.
Holbrook defeated Winslow 57-53 in a first round game between fellow 3A North Region rivals, and then lost to Monument Valley 70-56 in another all 3A North Region game. Chinle defeated Florence 57-50 in the first round before being ousted by Tuba City 60-35. The only teams not in the 3A North Region to reach the semi-finals was Safford which defeated Alchesay 62-45 and Estrella Foothills 69-59 to earn the right to play the top seeded Window Rock Lady Scouts.
