WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Coolidge Bears 68-50 in a first round game of the Arizona State 3A Conference Basketball Tournament played in Winslow on Saturday. The win improved Winslow's record to 27-6 for the season and ended Coolidge's season within a 14-10 record.
The Bulldogs were to meet Blue Ridge at Prescott on Tuesday in the quarter finals. The Bulldogs defeated Blue Ridge at the Blue Ridge Tournament, but the Yellowjackets defeated Winslow to win the Cake Shootout in Winslow. The two met in the rubber game of the series in Prescott. Blue Ridge edged Parker 62-60 to reach the quarter finals.
The Bulldogs led 18-11 after the first quarter but the Bears fought back in the second period to cut the margin to 27-25 at the half. Winslow had a huge third quarter and a commanding 52-32 advantage going into the final period.
Eli Birdshead led all scorers with 19 points for Coolidge but was the only Bear in double figures. Winslow had three players in double digits led by Tyler Williams with 15 points. Kraig Shirley and Jevon Estelle were both in double figures with 13 points and Tremayne Nez scored nine for the victors.
Of the other three teams from the 3A North Region in the tournament, Window Rock and Monument Valley both won and Holbrook did not play because Sedona Red Rock could not get to Holbrook due to weather conditions. At press time, it is not known if that game will be played or if the Roadrunners will get a forfeit and advance to Prescott. Window Rock defeated Estrella Foothills 61-54 at Window Rock and Monument Valley upset Florence 74-60 at Florence. Window Rock and Monument Valley were to play each other at Prescott on Tuesday. Holbrook was the top seed in the tournament and was probably to play Snowflake on Tuesday in Prescott if they got a forfeit or played and defeated Sedona Red Rock in a make-up game.
Other games completed on Saturday included Snowflake over Safford 77-58 and Fountain Hills over Payson 62-40. Snowflake was probably to play Holbrook on Tuesday. Fountain Hills was to play the winner of a game between Round Valley and Alchesay for which no score was available at press time.
