Window Rock girls win 3A North Region, Lady Bulldogs fourth

CHINLE, Ariz. - The Window Rock Lady Scouts defeated the Monument Valley Lady Mustangs 43-37 to win the 3A North Region Tournament in Chinle on Saturday. Tuba City finished third in the tournament with a 59-35 win over Winslow. Details were not available for all games.

In the game for third place, the Tuba City Lady Warriors defeated the Winslow Lady Bulldogs 59-35. The win improved Tuba Ci8y's record 19-9 for the season. Winslow fell to 16-13 for the season. The Lady Bulldogs are slated to host Holbrook in the first round of the Arizona State 3A Conference Tournament on Friday. Those two teams split regular season games.

The Lady Warriors started fast and led 17-8 after the first quarter and 32-17 at the half. The game was essentially over after a low scoring third quarter that ended with the Lady Warriors ahead 37-19 and able to coast home to the victory.

Jamie Roe was on fire for Tuba City and led all scorers with 29 points including hitting 13 of 16 free throws. Vernene Sheppard was also in double figures for the Lady Warriors with 14 points and Tristan Tsosie added nine for the victors. Felencia Keams was the only player in double digits for Winslow with 12 points.

In the semi-final game, the Window Rock Lady Scouts defeated the Winslow Lady Bulldogs 74- 45 on Friday. The loss dropped Winslow's record to 16-12 for the season and improved Window Rock's record to a sparkling 27-1.

The Lady Scouts led 21-16 after the first period and had a commanding 43-27 advantage at the half. Window Rock was well on their way to the Championship Game with a 59-42 advantage after three quarters of play.

Coralie Clark led all scorers with 19 points for the Lady Scouts. Ashley Mitchell with 17 points, Francine Clark with 14 and Arianne Sheka with 12 were all in double figures for Window Rock. Felencia Keams was the only Lady Bulldog in double figures with 14 points.

Window Rock won the 3A North Region Championship on Saturday with a 43-37 victory over the Monument Valley Lady Mustangs. The Lady Scouts enter the state tournament with a superlative 28-1 record but have had a number of close games with Monument Valley and Winslow. The Lady Scouts are likely favorites to win the title but the other entries from the 3A North Region including Winslow, Monument Valley, Tuba City and Holbrook could possibly be serious title contenders.
