TCRHCC pharmacy offers walk in flu shots for adults

TUBA CITY, Ariz. - It's influenza season. Have you had your flu shot yet? The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that everyone over six months of age get a flu vaccination this year. Influenza (or the "flu") is a highly contagious illness that affects everyone, but especially Native American families and communities. Native Americans are up to four times more at risk of severe illness from the flu that may require hospitalization, but you can reduce your risk and protect your family and community by getting a yearly flu shot.

Flu shots need to be updated every year. Sometimes we know it is hard for people to make it to the hospital or the community flu shot clinics. Sometimes it's just not the first thing on your list to do. But now the Tuba City Regional Health Care Center (TCRHCC) is offering a new, speedy way for adults to get their flu vaccine through our pharmacy.

Many of you know that retail pharmacies in larger cities offer adult flu shots. Now, the TCRHCC pharmacy is going to do the same. If you want to get a flu shot, come to the pharmacy during the hours listed below and register with patient registration. They will give you a form to give the pharmacist who will give you the vaccine at the pharmacy with no trip to the walk-in clinic.

Those wanting a flu shot can go to the main pharmacy Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from 7-9 p.m., or to the refill pharmacy on Saturday-Sunday from 8 a.m.- 7 p.m.

There are two kinds of flu vaccine available for most adults. There is the annual flu shot, which is an injected vaccine that can be used in anyone over six months of age. There is also a nasal spray vaccine for healthy adults up to age 50 for those who hate shots. This is a great option if you are eligible - no pain, and big gain.

Children over six months of age cannot be immunized at the pharmacy, but the Pediatric Clinic welcomes walk in visits Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for children who need their flu vaccines. Call (928) 283-2679 for a same day appointment if your child needs more than just their vaccine.

Thank you for helping keep yourself, your children, your elders, and your community healthy.
