KAYENTA, Ariz. - The Window Rock High School basketball teams defeated the Monument Valley High School teams in important 3A North Region basketball games played at Kayenta on Friday. The Lady Scouts stayed undefeated in the region and in Arizona with their 39-35 victory over a tough Monument Valley team. The Scouts boys' team defeated the Mustangs 85-73 to assure themselves of a high ranking in the region.
The Lady Scouts defeated the Lady Mustangs 39-35 and were the only team in the 3A North Region to defeat the Monument Valley girls. They had beaten the Lady Mustangs 50-34 at Window Rock earlier in the season. The win improved Window Rock's record to a near perfect 26-1 for the season and to 12-0 in the region. Monument Valley finished second in the region with only two losses to Window Rock in the 3A North Region. Window Rock's only loss of the season was to Kirkland, New Mexico in the Gallup Invitational Tournament Championship Game. The Lady Scouts were undefeated against Arizona teams with a tough 3A North and Arizona State 3A Conference Tournament both ahead of them.
In the girls' game, the contest was tight all the way. The teams were tied 8-8 after the first period and Monument Valley led by a point 25-24 at the half. Window Rock went ahead 31-27 in the third quarter and held on for the win. Ashley Mitchell with 22 points for the Lady Scouts was the only player for Window Rock in double figures and the game high scorer. Bradley Nash with 13 points was Monument Valley's only player in double figures.
In the boys' game the Scouts defeated the Monument Valley Mustangs 85-73. The win improved Window Rock's record to 18-7 and their regional record to 10-2. Monument Valley actually led 25-19 after the first quarter but the Scouts were up 41-38 at the half and 65-59 after three quarters. Five players finished in double figures for Window Rock led by Ote Manson with 25 points. Joshua Pablo and Ty Wauneka with 13 points each and Dominique Dale with 12 and Kyler Ashley with 10 were in double digits for Window Rock. The Scouts will finish among the top teams in the 3A North Region regular season play and are also facing the 3A North Region Tournament at Chinle and the Arizona State 3A Conference Tournament.
