Tuba City girls, Chinle boys win 3A regional contests
CHINLE, Ariz. - The Tuba City girls' basketball team defeated the Chinle girls and the Chinle boys' team defeated the Tuba City boys decisively in 3A North Region games played at Chinle on Saturday. The games were the last of the regular season as all four teams will be in Chinle for the regional tournament set to begin on Tuesday.
In the girls' game, Tuba City sped to a 19-11 first quarter lead which was cut to 33-28 b y the half but increased to 52-40 after three quarters. The Lady Warriors pulled away in the final period for their easy 68-45 win.
Vernene Sheppard led the Lady Warriors with 20 points to take game high honors. Jonel Yazzie with 14 points and Jamie Roe with 11 were also in double figures for Tuba City. Karla Kee was the only Lady Wildcat in double figures with 15 points.
The Chinle Wildcats shellacked the Tuba City Warriors 89-39 in the boys' game. The game was fairly close after the first quarter with Chinle up 17-13, but the Wildcats had a commanding 44-24 lead at the half and a tremendous 70-33 margin after three quarters.
Sheridan Nodestine led all scorers with 32 points for Chinle. Kevin Yazzie with 17 points and Stanson Etsitty with 10 were also in double figures for the Wildcats. Kent Tallsalt was the only Warrior in double figures with 10 points.
