Free cancer screenings at North Country Health Care for qualifying women
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Women who meet qualifying requirements can receive free breast and cervical cancer screenings through the Well Woman HealthCheck Program offered by North Country HealthCare. The screenings will be held March 4 at the North Country HealthCare clinic located at 2920 N. Fourth St. in Flagstaff.
The Well Woman HealthCheck Program at North Country HealthCare educates women throughout northern Arizona and helps them receive free clinical breast exams, mammograms and Pap tests in their own communities. The purpose is to provide access to quality cancer screening services for Arizona women.
Since 1998, the Well Woman HealthCheck Program at North Country has reached more than 20,000 women with information about the importance of early detection of breast cancer and has referred nearly 8,000 women for mammograms and clinical breast exams.
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in the U.S., and the leading single cause of death overall in women between the ages of 40 and 55. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 3,950 new cases of breast cancer will have been detected in Arizona in 2010 and 740 lives lost.
Nationwide, there is a new diagnosis every three minutes and a death every 14 minutes from breast cancer. While advances have been made in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure, early detection still affords the best opportunity for successful treatment. Programs such as the Well Woman HealthCheck Program help ensure that all women have access to early detection information and options, even poor and medically underserved women.
This program is funded by Arizona Department of Health Services, the Avon Foundation for Women, and the Phoenix Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
