Winslow boys, Monument Valley girls split wins

WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Monument Valley and Winslow basketball teams split their 3A North Region games played in Winslow on Friday. The games were played before a packed house and will likely play a role in determining the seeding for the regional and state tournaments.

The Monument Valley Lady Mustangs defeated the Winslow Lady Bulldogs 47-41 in an important 3A North Region basketball game. The win improved Monument Valley's record to 17-5 for the season and 9-1 in the region. Winslow fell to 14-8 for the season and 4-3 in the region.

The Lady Bulldogs had a narrow

11-9 lead after the first period of play but trailed 21-18 at the intermission. The Lady Mustangs increased their lead by a point to 31-27 in the third quarter and held on for the victory.

Felencia Keams led all scorers with 17 points for Winslow but was the only Lady Bulldog in double figures. Bradley Nash and McKara Kescoli each scored 12 points for Monument Valley and Destiny Holiday was only a point behind them with 11 points.

Winslow was to host Window Rock on Saturday. The Lady Scouts had a perfect regional record and only one loss for the season entering Friday's action. The Lady Bulldogs were to host Tuba City on Tuesday and will journey to Window Rock on Thursday for a rematch with the Lady Scouts. They will host the Holbrook Lady Roadrunners on Friday in the final game of the regular season.

Monument Valley has an important girls' game remaining against the Lady Scouts in Kayenta which may well decide the 3A North Region regular season title. The regional tournament will be played at Chinle beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 8.

Boys game

In the boys' game the Winslow Bulldogs defeated the Monument Valley Mustangs 69-62 in a 3A North Region basketball game played in Winslow on Friday. The win improved Winslow's record to 21-6 for the season and dropped Winslow to 20-6 and 4-1 in the region.

The Bulldogs got off to a strong start and had a double digit 17-6 lead after the first quarter. The lead at the intermission was a commanding 41-23 and a still substantial 54-37 after three quarters. Monument Valley made a charge in the final period and cut the margin to eight points with almost two minutes left to go but the Bulldogs held on for the victory.

Kraig Shirley of Winslow and Preston Parrish of Monument Valley led all scorers with 19 points each. Jevon Estelle was only a point behind those two with 18 points for the Bulldogs. Tyler Williams was also in double figures for Winslow with 14 points and Chad Keith had 14 points for the Mustangs.

Winslow was to play Window Rock in Winslow on Saturday and host Tuba City on Tuesday. The Bulldogs will be at Window Rock on Thursday and host Holbrook in the final game of the regular season on Friday. The 3A North Region Tournament will be played at Chinle and begin on Tuesday, Feb. 8.
