WINSLOW, Ariz. - The Gallup Invitational Tournament has been one of the toughest tests for the Winslow High School girls' basketball teams for years. Some of the best teams from Arizona, New Mexico and sometimes Colorado play in that event. This year was no exception as Winslow suffered its first loss of the campaign to a strong Clovis, New Mexico team.
The Winslow Lady Bulldogs lost their first game in the tough Gallup Invitational Tournament played on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but came back to win their next two games and improve their record to 3-1 for the season. The loss was to eventual tournament champion Clovis, New Mexico which easily defeated all of its opponents in a tournament which is always one of the severest tests for the Lady Bulldogs.
Clovis defeated the Lady Bulldogs 72-42 in the team's opening game of the tournament. Clovis led 16-5 after the first period, 38-15 at the half and 57-27 after three quarters. Paige Gardner led all scorers with 22 points for Clovis. Krista Slough was also in double figures for Clovis with 13 points. Kiersten Nezzie and Corey Nez led Winslow with eight points apiece.
Winslow got a 50-49 win over Cleveland, New Mexico in a thrilling contest. Corey Nez and Kiersten Nezzie again led the Winslow attack with 11 points each and Mattea Begaii scored 10 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Cleveland had 10 players score but none were in double figures of had more than seven points.
The Lady Bulldogs defeated Miramura, N.M. 61-28 to finish the tournament with two wins and just one loss. Mattea Begaii led all scorers with 16 points for the lady Bulldogs. Kiersten Nezzie with 12 points and Corey Nez with 10 were also in double figures for Winslow. Miramura did not have a player in double figures.
Winslow Coach Jarron Jordan said after the tournament that the competition was tough and that he thought the Lady Bulldogs might have been capable of making the finals had they played anyone other than Clovis in their opening game.
In a game against Hopi High School on Nov. 29 at Polacca, the Lady Bulldogs had defeated the Lady Bruins 70-31. Winslow led 20-7 after the first quarter, 42-18 at the half and 64-23 after three periods. Kiersten Nezzie led all scorers with 17 points. Mattea Begaii had 15 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Hopi did not have a player in double figures.
Winslow was to host Hopi on Tuesday and Ganado on Saturday before playing Blue Ridge at Pinetop on Tuesday, Dec. 13. The Winslow Winter Classic tournament will be held on Dec. 15, 16 and 17.
