Football starts Friday with scrimmage in Winslow

WINSLOW, Ariz. - Football has always been a popular sport in Winslow and will be a major attraction starting on Friday when the Bulldogs entertain the Camp Verde Cougars for a controlled scrimmage. The scrimmage will begin at 6:30 p.m. and both teams will run an equal number of plays. Coaches may be on the field to advise their teams and correct mistakes. There will be no uniforms, cheerleaders or keeping of the score.

Winslow will have three teams in high school football this season with a varsity, junior varsity and freshman team. This is an improvement over last season when the school did field a freshman team. There will also be an eighth grade and a seventh grade team from Winslow Junior High School playing this year.

After the scrimmage with Camp Verde the Bulldogs will host the Sedona Scorpions at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug.26 for their season opener. The Bulldogs will host the archrival Holbrook Roadrunners at 7 p.m. on Friday Sept. 2 in what could be an important game with playoff implications early in the season.

Winslow's first road game will be with the Flagstaff Eagles in Flagstaff at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9. The Homecoming Game for the Bulldogs will be on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. against the Ganado Hornets.

The Bulldogs will be on the road for a pair of games at Chinle on Friday, Sept. 23 against the Chinle Wildcats at 6 p.m. and on Friday, Sept. 30 at Snowflake against the Snowflake Lobos at 7 p.m.

The team will return home on Friday, Oct. 7 to host the defending Arizona State 3A Conference Champion Show Low Cougars at 7 p.m.

A pair of road games follows on Friday, Oct. 14 at Flagstaff to meet the Coconino Panthers at 7 p.m. and on Friday, Oct. 21 at Kayenta to meet the Monument Valley Mustangs at 6 p.m.

The varsity's last game will be played at Emil Nasser Stadium on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. against the Blue Ridge Yellowjackets, one of the most successful high school teams in the nation. State playoffs will be determined later for teams that qualify.

The Winslow junior varsity team will play Holbrook at Holbrook on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. That team will host Flagstaff at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8 and play Ganado at Ganado on Wednesday, Sept.14 at 5:30 p.m.

Back for a pair of games Winslow will meet Chinle at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22 and Snowflake at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29. Winslow will play at Show Low at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6.

Two more games complete the home schedule for the Winslow junior varsity which will host Coconino at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13 and Monument Valley at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22. The junior varsity's final game will be against Blue Ridge at Pinetop on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 6:30 p.m.

The Winslow High School freshman team will open its season at home against Show Low on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 5:30 p.m. The team will play at Flagstaff on Thursday, Sept 8 at 3:30 p.m. Then it is back home for a game against Tuba City at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14. Winslow will host Snowflake at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29.

There are four games on the schedule for October beginning with a game at Show Low on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 4:30 p.m. Winslow will host Coconino at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13 and St. Johns at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20. The final game will be at Pinetop at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27 against Blue Ridge.

In junior high school games the Winslow teams will play against Show Low on Thursday, Aug. 25 at 3:30 p.m. with the eighth game at Winslow and the seventh grade at Show Low. On Thursday, Sept. 1 the teams will play Blue Ridge at 3:0 p.m. with the seventh grade at home and the eighth at Pinetop.

The teams will play Payson Rim Country on Thursday, Sept. 8 with the seventh grade team at home and the eighth at Payson. There is a single game set for Thursday, Sept. 15 in Winslow at 3:30 p.m. against Joseph City. Both Winslow teams will probably combine but this has not been announced.

Winslow teams will play Round Valley squads at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22. The eighth grade team will play in Winslow and the seventh grade team at Eagar. On Thursday, Sept. 29 the Winslow eighth grade team will host Holbrook at 3 p.m. while the seventh grade team plays at Holbrook at 3:30 p.m.

The final games of the season will be against St. Johns on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 3:30 p.m. The seventh grade game will be in Winslow while the eighth grade teams will play at St. Johns.
